Staggered sowing of hybrid rice

Hybrid rice has been a successful and widely adopted technology that has increased rice production in China since early 80’s of the last century. But in India inspite of development of several successful hybrids the technology has not been widely adopted and is cultivated in select regions only. West Bengal is the largest producer of rice. But hybrid rice is cultivated in a very limited area. There is urgent need to adopt the hybrid rice technology to enhance the production level to meet the ever increasing food demand.

A field experiment was conducted during 2016 and 2017 at Agricultural Research Station, Malagi, UAS, Dharwad to know the effect of seeding interval and transplanting age on seed yield and seed quality in KRH-4 hybrid rice. The results revealed that, the transplanting of seedlings at the age of 18 days recorded the highest number of productive tillers (9.47 and 10.52), highest seed yield per hectare (838 kg, 888 kg) whereas, the early sowing of pollen parent by 2 days ensured better synchrony with higher seed set per cent (18.11 %, 18.54 %) and seed yield per hectare (1170 kg, 1225 kg).
