Staging of hepatic cirrhosis
-
Our primary objective was to assess whether these miRNAs could serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), even in its early stages, from other liver diseases, particularly liver cirrhosis (LC).

Hepatic hydrothorax is a major pulmonary complication of liver disease occurring in up to 5-10% of patients with cirrhosis. While pneumothorax ex-vacuo is a known phenomenon in malignant effusions, to our knowledge, it has never been described in association with hepatic hydrothoraces.

Viral infections account for significant proportion of CLD. Hepatitis C virus is the major cause of non-A, non-B hepatitis worldwide. HCV can lead to chronic liver disease causing cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and end stage liver disease among 5-20% of infected persons. In India about 20 million people are known to have HCV infection and a quarter of them are expected to develop chronic liver disease in the next 10-15 years. 1) To determine prevalence of Hepatitis C virus infection in chronic liver disease patients. 2) To identify the risk factor for HCV infection.

Circulatory microRNAs have recently emerged as non-invasive and effective biomarkers for diagnosis of various diseases. Currently there is no reliable biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis or even staging of fibrotic and cirrhotic complications arising from HCV infection. This study aimed at investigating plasma miR484, miR-524, miR-615-5p and miR-628-3p expression signatures in Egyptian patients with HCV mediated cirrhosis, fibrosis and HCC.

Forty years ago, just prior to the discovery of the hepatitis B surface antigen, the concept that chronic liver disease could be a sequel to infection by any agent of acute viral hepatitis was controversial and hotly debated. With the development of specific and sensitive serologic and virologic markers of infection by the bloodborne and enterically transmitted hepatitis viruses, the linkage of the former agents with chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma was established beyond doubt....

Hepatocellular Conditions Hepatocellular diseases that can cause jaundice include viral hepatitis, drug or environmental toxicity, alcohol, and end-stage cirrhosis from any cause (Table 43-2). Wilson's disease, once believed to occur primarily in young adults, should be considered in all adults if no other cause of jaundice is found. Autoimmune hepatitis is typically seen in young to middle-aged women but may affect men and women of any age. Alcoholic hepatitis can be differentiated from viral and toxin-related hepatitis by the pattern of the aminotransferases.
