Star anise

By means of the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method, 21 volatile components have been identified in the essential oils of fruits and the leaves of star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f., Illiciaceae) in Vietnam, in which, essential oil of star anise fruits has 18 components, essential oil of star anise leaves has 16 components, with content have been determined more than 98.60% total compounds of essential oil.

In this paper, we built a simple and quantitative method to evaluate the fragrance intensity, which could be considered as the remained oil quantity on fabric treated by microcapsule loaded with star anise essential oil.

Summer anise star collected from Lang Son in 2008 was studied. The material was characterized by the essential oil content of 8,75%, moisture content of 13,2%, acid index of 4.5 mg KOH/g, ester index of 254.17 mg KOH/g and the relative density of 0,981. The procedures of essential oil distillation and trans-anethol isolation have been studied based on the properties of anise material. The yield of proposed procedure reached 76,4 % and the purity of anethol isolated was 96,83%.

The methods for obtaining simultaneously essential oil and shikimic acid from star anise fruit (Illicium verum Hook) were investigated. From obtained results, we chose a simple and effective method for desired purpose. With this method, distillation of essential oil and extraction of shikimic acid were simultaneously carried out in the round bottom flask of the Clevenger apparatus.
