In ebook "Bio-based polyols and polyurethanes" the most recent advances in the production of polyols and polyurethanes from renewable resources, mainly vegetable oils, lignocellulosic biomass, starch, and protein. The typical processes for the production of polyols from each of the above mentioned feedstocks are introduced and the properties of the resultant polyols and polyurethanes are also discussed.

This work reports on water desorption from cassava starch in relation with the structure and conditioning of granules in suspensions or after equilibration in desiccators. The experimental work is performed by thermogravimetric analysis with isothermal and non-isothermal protocols and interpreted to derive the activation energies and desorption frequencies according to the humidity range with no adjustable parameter.

Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is used for repletion of acute intravasal volume loss in surgical patients. However, in critically ill patients, HES is associated with acute kidney injury. We aimed to evaluate the effect of HES on perioperative cystatin C (cystC)-derived estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRcystC) in patients undergoing open and robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

Plastic single-use packaging is one of the largest contributors to plastic pollution in Vietnam as well as in many other countries. Alternative materials, especially materials derived from natural and renewable sources, should be developed to solve this global issue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the synthesis and properties of packaging paper sheets from sugarcane bagasse and lemongrass by-products.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-based transient assays have become a common tool for answering questions related to protein localization and gene expression in a cellular context. The use of these assays assumes that the transiently transformed cells are observed under relatively authentic physiological conditions and maintain ‘normal’ sub-cellular behaviour.

The variation of growth and cold tolerance of two natural Arabidopsis accessions, Cvi (cold sensitive) and Rschew (cold tolerant), was analysed on a proteomic, phosphoproteomic and metabolomic level to derive characteristic information about genotypically distinct strategies of metabolic reprogramming and growth maintenance during cold acclimation.

The study aimed to compare the ability of extracting resistant starch (RS) from three common fruit seeds in Vietnam, namely avocado, jackfruit and mango seed. Avocado (Persea Americana) seeds, jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) seeds and mango (Mangifera indica L.) seeds were collected from local markets in Ho Chi Minh City, processed and extracted of starch.

In the past years, various studies have been done on biodegradable materials to replace petroleum based plastics for food packaging application. For this purpose, biopolymers are considered the most favorable material because of their biodegradable nature and long shelf life properties like resistance to chemical or enzymatic reactions. Keeping in view the non-renewable nature and waste disposal problem of petroleum based plastics; newer concept of use of bioplastics came into existence. Bioplastics are derived from renewable resources i.e.

A new class of injectable, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel is reported. This hydrogel is derived from N-succinyl chitosan (SCS) mixed with water-soluble dialdehyde starch (DAS) without using a conventional chemical crosslinker. The hybrid hydrogel is formed owing to the Schiff’s base reaction between amine groups of SCS and dialdehyde groups of DAS to form ACH‚NA group. SCS, DAS, and SCS–DAS hybrid hydrogels were synthesized and then characterized by FTIR analysis spectroscopy.

Starch- and plant-protein-based glues, for example, do not have the strength of petrochemical-derived superglues. On the other hand, plant-derived chemicals have unique advantages for other uses. Recombinant proteins, for example, can be designed and produced in plants to provide tissue glues analogous to the fibrinogen that naturally forms around a flesh wound. Emerging technologies offer dramatic new capabilities to alter plant metabolic pathways, opening up unprecedented opportunities to produce high-value chemicals from renewable resources....

Carbohydrates are sugars and starches derived from cereals, tubers, roots, and other substances such as cellulose and lignin from plant cell walls, vessels and woody tissues. Carbohydrates do mainly provide energy for maintenance and production. A surplus of energy is stored as body fat. A part of the carbohydrates is crude fibre (CF), the remaining is nitrogen-free extract (NFE). The latter consists of sugars, starches and sugar-like substances. Sugars and starches are much easier to digest than CF.

Inhibitors targeting pancreatic a-amylase and intestinal a-glucosidases delay glucose production following digestion and are currently used in the treatment of Type II diabetes. Maltase-glucoamylase (MGA), a family 31 glycoside hydrolase, is ana-glucosidase anchored in the membrane of small intestinal epithelial cells responsible for the final step of mammalian starch digestion leading to the release of glucose.

In 2008, the price of green power for residential customers in utility programs ranged from -1.0¢/kWh (a savings compared to standard service) to 8.8¢/kWh above standard electricity rates, with an average premium of 1.8¢/kWh and median of 1.5¢/kWh. These premiums have been adjusted to account for any fuel-cost exemptions granted to green power program participants. 16 In 2008, the utility programs with the lowest premiums for energy derived from new renewable sources had premiums ranging from -1.0¢/kWh (a savings) to 0.9¢/kWh. On average, consumers spend about $5.

Petroleum-based industrial products have gradually replaced products derived from biological materials. However, biologically based products are making a comeback--because of a threefold increase in farm productivity and new technologies. Biobased Industrial Products envisions a biobased industrial future, where starch will be used to make biopolymers and vegetable oils will become a routine component in lubricants and detergents.

Rapid expansion in international credit bears watching because, in many boom-bust credit cycles in the past, such credit tended to grow faster than overall credit during the boom.5 We illustrate this broad finding with data from several European countries that have suffered credit booms and busts since 2000. Then, we draw a parallel with countries that were caught up in the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. By international credit, we refer to three components of total bank credit, the first two of which are types of cross-border credit.

Research, development and industrialisation of renewable energy are currently moving at a rapid pace worldwide. Biofuels play significant roles in decarbonisation of our future energy needs and act to mitigate deleterious impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. Liquid transportation biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) now represent key contributors to the bioenergy portfolios in many countries. National governmental obligations and international directives are mandating the blending of biofuels in petrol (gasoline) and diesel and these are acting as great stimuli to this industrial sector.
