Yams are not among the most common sources of industrial starch, which are mostly imported at a cost. Exploiting alternative sources of starch would lessen the burden of its importation. Starches from four local varieties of Dioscorea rotundata namely Pona, Labreko, Asobayere and Muchumudu were analyzed for their physicochemical and functional properties.

Slowly digestible starches have received interest due to their lower increase of postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels and, hence, modification of starches towards slower digestibility has commercial interest. However, chemical characteristics driving enzymatic (digestive) degradation are not fully unraveled.

In the new era, paper is still the main source of raw materials for daily life and production activities. Therefore, the research team explored recycling paper from bagasse to reduce waste and limit the depletion of available resources. The main material is bagasse with binders of aloe vera, corn starch, and CaCO3 in certain proportions to create paper products.

Hyperlipidaemia is considered a cause of other diseases that are clinically important and potentially life threatening. Combination of pea and barley as exclusive starch sources is known to interfere with glycemic control in diabetic dogs, but their effect on lipid profile of hiperlipidaemic dogs is yet to be evaluated.

Studies on the effect of different nutritional compounds on antibiotic activity revealed that the highest antibacterial activity was obtained when 1% starch (w/v) was used as the sole carbon source along with mineral trace elements. Extraction and purification of TBG19NRA1 culture supernatant led to the isolation of a pure molecule with good antibacterial activity. The compound has been identified as the cyclic polyether lasalocid A on the basis IR, MS and 13C NMR data interpretation and comparison with reference data from literature.

The present study describes the simultaneous expression of thermostable industrial alpha (α) and beta (β) amylase enzymes that have been used widely in starch industry. Genomic DNA of Bacillus stearothermophilus DSM 22 strain for α amylase and, Thermoanaerobacterium (Clostridium) thermosulfurogenes DSM 2229 strain for β amylase were used as gene sources. Both genes were ligated into pETDuet-1 expression vector separately and resulting recombinant vectors were transformed into Escherichia coli BL21 competent cells by electroporation.

After cereals, root and tuber crops are the main source of starch in the human diet. Starch biosynthesis was certainly a significant target for selection during the domestication of these crops. But domestication of these root and tubers crops is also associated with gigantism of storage organs and changes of habitat.

Because the cost of cereals is unstable and represents a large part of production charges for meattype chicken, there is an urge to formulate alternative diets from more cost-effective feedstuff. We have recently shown that meat-type chicken source is prone to adapt to dietary starch substitution with fat and fiber.

Plastic single-use packaging is one of the largest contributors to plastic pollution in Vietnam as well as in many other countries. Alternative materials, especially materials derived from natural and renewable sources, should be developed to solve this global issue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the synthesis and properties of packaging paper sheets from sugarcane bagasse and lemongrass by-products.

Cereal grains, including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), are major sources of food and feed, with wheat being dominant in temperate zones. These end uses exploit the storage reserves in the starchy endosperm of the grain, with starch being the major storage component in most cereal species.

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is important commercial fruits of India. It is liked by people due to its high palatability, excellent taste and exemplary nutritive value. Mango pulp is rich is carbohydrates, minerals, vitamin C, starch, pectin, carotenoids, but lacks in protein, fat and some essential amino acids. But pulses are good sources of important dietary nutrients, proteins, minerals and vitamins. The present study was carried out to develop soy flour incorporated mango bars from two mango varieties namely Neelum and Totapuri (Bangalora) with pretreated soy flour.

Polysaccharide monooxygenases (PMOs) catalyze oxidative degradation of recalcitrant carbohydrate chains in cellulose, starch, and chitin. In biofuel industry, the conversion of rich lignocellulose source to fermentable sugars by hydrolytic cellulases can be synergistically boosted by cellulose-active PMOs (AA9 PMOs) found in a vast number of fungi that grow on biomass.

The rationale of this elementary work was to develop starch based bio-coat for food items using permutation combination of starch of different sources (corn, potato, tapioca) and various plasticizers (glycerine, rice bran oil, sesame oil, castrol oil, soya bean oil and olive oil). An eco-friendly alternative to conventional petro-plastic polymer with a futuristic application as edible food wraps was intended as the outcome.

Dietary starches are important sources of energy for many human societies and it is clear that they can also make quite specific contributions to health. Resistant starch has received much attention for both its potential health benefits (similar to soluble fibre) and functional properties. Resistant starch (RS) encompasses forms of starch, which are not digested in the small intestine by enzymes but fermented in the large intestine.

Potato is probably the most popular food item in the Indian diet and India is one of the largest producers of potato. Potato is a very rich source of starch. It also contains phosphorus, calcium, iron and some Vitamins C and A. It is vastly consumed as a vegetable and is also used in various forms such as starch, flour, alcohol and dextrin. Besides being used as a daily food item in various vegetable preparations, potato today increasingly finds use in the form of chips or wafers as snacks food.

The purpose of this study was to isolate and screened amylase producing fungi from different sources. A total of twenty amylase producing fungal isolates were obtained from soil, fruits, vegetables, baked food, and flour on the starch mineral agar medium. It was observed that ten fungi and ten yeasts isolates produced amylase, only nine fungal colonies showed positive results for amylase production. The maximum amylase activity shown by yeast isolates YPO3 (3.2cm) followed by YBR2 (3.1cm).

The present study was undertaken to investigate the proximate, mineral and chemical composition of different parts viz. seeds, aerial parts and roots of garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) collected from two different locations i.e. Hisar and Solan. Results revealed that all parts of garden cress were found to have good proximate composition. On the basis of calorific value, all parts of garden cress collected from both locations were found to be very rich sources of energy. Seeds, aerial parts and roots of garden cress contained significant amount of minerals viz. Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn.
