Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud (Ramie) produces one of the longest natural fibers in nature. The bark of ramie mainly comprises of the phloem tissue of stem and is the raw material for fiber. Therefore, identifying the molecular regulation of phloem development is important for understanding of bast fiber biosynthesis and improvement of fiber quality in ramie.

One of the most noticeable bast fibre crops is roselle, which is widely grown in Assam. The scientific name for Roselle is Hibiscus sabdariffa L., and the plant is from the Malvacea family. Roselle found abundantly in tropical areas. It is a perennial shrub yielding fibre from the bark of the canes which provides excellent raw material for blending with the natural and synthetic fibres. It is an annual, erect, bushy, herbaceous sub shrub that can grow up to 8 ft (2.4m) tall and diameter of stem 2.0-4.0 cm at three different levels, viz.

The cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.Taub.) also known as Guar is one of the most important commercial crop and major source of guar gum. The clusterbean is affected by various fungal diseases. Among those dry root rot caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid., a soil borne, cosmopolitan fungus infecting cluster bean and more than 500 plant species. The first symptom of disease is yellowing of the leaves, dark lesion may be seen on the bark at the ground level, the basal stem & main root may show dry rot symptoms.

Five prenylated caged xanthones: desoxymorellin (1), morellic acid (2), gambogic acid (3), isogambogic acid (4) and 10α-butoxy gambogic acid (5), were isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia hanburyi collected in Vietnam. Their structures were elucidated by detailed 1D, 2D NMR, MS spectroscopic analyses and compared with reported data. Two major constituents, gambogic acid and isogambogic acid, displayed strong cytotoxicity against LLC and SK-LU-1cell lines with IC50 values in the range from 0.35±0.05 µM to 2.26±0.19 µM.

A large number of the world’s population suffer from depression and anxieties at some points in their life time, the sufferers are however sceptical about the available orthodox drugs largely because of side effects, cost and availability. This present study was aimed at evaluating the antidepressant potentials of Voacanga africana to query its ethno medicinal claim. The extract of the stem-bark of the plant was screened for its phytochemical composition, and antidepressant potentials assessed using forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST).
