Stemphylium blight disease

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most important commercial vegetable crop grown in India. In Karnataka, Northeastern Dry Zone is the potential area for the production of onion. The major constraints in the production of onion are diseases caused by fungi. The present investigation was undertaken to know the disease severity in Northern parts of Karnataka. A roving survey was conducted to know the percent disease severity (PDI) of purple blotch, stemphylium blight and basal rot of onion in districts of Northern parts of Karnataka during kharif 2014-15.

The results of the study revealed thaturea was most effective in inhibiting the fungal growth at all the tested concentration. It was also found that soluble NPK and Potassium nitrate promoted the fungal growth at all the concentration. Among biorationals, bromonitropropanol gave the highest mycelial inhibition (73.72%), while sodium and potassium bicarbonates at lower concentration promoted the fungal growth, but inhibited the growth at higher concentration.

The present investigation was conducted during the month of August, September and October on kharif season onion in two years i.e. 2018-2019 in the 24 villages of six districts in Bihar.

Survey conducted during the year 2016 and 2017 at three stage of crop growth of onion in four districts of the Kashmir valley revealed the prevalence of disease in all onion growing areas of the valley during the month of May and June, while during the month of April prevalence of disease was recorded at only few locations, while as rest of the locations were disease free with overall incidence of 1.70, 28.02 and 60.33 and intensity of 0.30, 5.96 and 36.44 per cent, during the month of April, May and June, respectively.

Onion is an important crop grown worldwide for its culinary and medicinal properties. One of the major bottlenecks in its production is the foliar blight disease. The disease is responsible for causing huge losses in its successful production. Pathogens isolated from the onion foliar blight symptomatic leaves for two successive cropping seasons were Alternaria alternata, A. porri, A. tenuissima, Stemphylium vesicarium, Cladosporium allii-cepae and Colletotrichum circinans. However, the relative occurrence of the pathogens varied during the cropping season.

Stemphylium blight (SB), caused by Stemphylium botryosum, is a devastating disease in lentil production. Although it is known that accessions of Lens ervoides possess superior SB resistance at much higher frequency than the cultivated lentil species, very little is known about the molecular basis regulating SB resistance in L. ervoides.

Twenty one onion varieties were tested during 2017-18 at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand for evaluating their resistance levels against Stemphylium blight disease of onion caused by Stemphylium vesicarium (Wallr) Simmons under field and glasshouse conditions. The disease has emerged as a serious problem to onion growers all across the country including the tarai region of Uttarakhand. Disease occurred by natural infection in field while artificial inoculation was carried out in glasshouse.
