  • Papaya is prone to many diseases incited by fungi, bacteria, nematodes and viruses leading to enormous loss in yield. Among all, papaya anthracnose incited by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. appear to be more severe causing substantial losses to papaya fruits during transit and storage. Papaya anthracnose is the most important disease throughout the year in India and it became a major limiting factor in papaya cultivation.

  • In the present study attempts have been made on the isolation and identification of fungi in order to study the mycoflora responsible to reduce the seed quality, longevity and vigor in the pulse of Hyacinth bean. Lablab purpureus L. is an annual plant that grows in poorly - drained soils belongs to the family Fabaceae. It contains high amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Fungal cultures were isolated by using blotter and agar plate methods.22 fungal species and 14 genera were isolated.

  • Jackfruit is seasonal and possesses 100-400 seeds. Impact of processing on storage and microbial quality of jackfruit seed flour was investigated. Hard variety of jackfruits was procured from UAS, Dharwad campus. Seeds separated, processed employing: boiling, pressure cooking, pan roasting, microwave roasting, baking. Seeds were chopped, dried and milled to flour. Fifty grams of flour were packed in two packaging material-160 gauge polyethylene and foil-coated aluminium pouches. Samples were withdrawn at 15 days interval and assessed for infestation, colour and moisture.

  • Aflatoxins are potent carcinogenic and mutagenic metabolites mainly produced by Aspergillus flavus. A study was conducted to manage the aflatoxin production in maize grains in ambient storage conditions using bioagents i.e., Trichoderma asperellm, T. viride and Aspergillus niger isolated from maize grain itself and initially tested for antagonistic ability against radial growth of Aspergillus flavus. T. asperellum was found most effective in suppressing the growth of test fungi.

  • Harvested paddy grain with high moisture content must be dried to about 12 per cent (w.b) within 24 hours for safe storage and milling. Approximately 9 per cent of paddy was lost due to outdated drying methods, milling, unscientific method of storage, transport and handling (Basavaraj et al., 2015). Mechanical drying is essential to maintain the quality of grain during storage to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi and the development of insects and mites.

  • Red grape rotten in storage is a major problem for consumers, moreover the fruit after offering in Pura (Bali island) cannot be stored for long. Efforts to control environmentally friendly diseases are hopeful in the future, using exophytic and endophytic fungi derived from healthy red grapes that need to be utilized. The results showed that red grape rot was caused by Aspergillus niger. Fungi/actinomycetes found in exophytes were 19 isolates while those of endophytes consisted of 5 isolates.

  • A study was conducted to determine the mycoflora associated with pigeon pea cultivar MA6 and effect of botanicals on growth of mycoflora. The dominant fungi observed on pigeon pea cultivar MA6 seed were Rhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Penicillium citrinum, P. rubrum, Alternaria alternata, A. solani, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium oxysporium. Among the treatments, the sulphate and nitrate treated seeds showed the less number of fungi isolated in comparison to untreated seeds. The nature of fungal flora had changed with prolongation of storage period of pigeonpea seeds.

  • Large amount of wheat grains wasted during preservation. This paper deals with an high voltage electric field (HVEF) preservation method for wheat grain. The HV upto 50 kV is given in pulses between two electrodes and wheat grain is kept in between them to increase its shelf life. The wheat is spoiled during storage, fungi crop during harvesting, transport, and handling operations. The temperature and moisture content during storage are major factors to spoil it and germinate insects and fungal growth. This HVEF remove the moisture content and avoid fungal growth.

  • The in vitro antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus medica L. on storage fungi of Arachis hypogea L. stored for 6 months was evaluated using the disc diffusion agar method. The oil exhibited a wide spectrum of fungitoxicity, inhibiting all 14 fungus species tested. Thus, the oil can be exploited as a fumigant against storage fungi for the preservation of stored legume seeds due to its wide range of activity, non-phytotoxicity, and long-term persistence of fungitoxicity.

  • Because agricultural production is seasonal, the products have to be stored for distribution later. The storage function involves risks -- risks of deterioration of products and risks of fluctuating market prices. Elaborate precautions are taken to guard against any deterioration of products from excessive moisture, heat, contaminating metals, bacteria and fungi, insects, and rodents and against loss from fire and theft.
