  • This study focused on mangrove cover mapping by using vegetation indices in Tien Yen district. Mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in many coastal regions, protecting against erosion and storm surges, providing nursery habitats of aquatic organisms, and offering livelihoods to local communities.

  • In addition, Climate change causes sea level rise, thereby increasing the existing water level along with that in large rivers and also causing storm surge, which coincides with the time of flood discharge at Dau Tieng and Tri An reservoirs.

  • Typhoon-induced disasters including storm surge and high wave are obvious threats to coastal areas in Vietnam. Thus, many researchers have paid their attention to this issue. The approaching methods are varied, including statistical methods and also numerical methods. This study suggests the coupled models Delft3D-FLOW and WAVE, using the meteorological output data from the Weather Research Forecast (WRF) for investigating the typhoon induced disasters in the coastal areas in Viet Nam.

  • Seawalls have been erected to protect hundreds of towns and tourism areas stretching along the coast of Vietnam. During storm surges or high tides, wave overtopping and splash-up would often threaten the safety of infrastructures, traffic and residents on the narrow land behind. Therefore, this study investigates these wave-wall interactions via hydraulic small scale model tests at Thuyloi University. Remarkably, the structure models were shaped to have different seaward faces and bullnoses.

  • This research utilizes the disaster risk concept developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to determine and assess the storm surge risk in aquaculture in the coastal area from Quang Ninh to Ninh Binh province. The results indicated that the highest level of risk occurred in Thai Thuy district (Thai Binh province) and Quang Yen town (Quang Ninh province). The second highest level or risks occurred in Tien Hai district (Thai Binh province), Mong Cai city and Hai Ha district (Quang Ninh province).

  • The results show that in the period of 1951–2016 there were many typhoons which landed and induced high storm surge on the coast of the North and the North of Center of Vietnam. During one thousand years, there have been 4,678 typhoons entering the coastal zone from Quang Ninh to Ca Mau.

  • This paper presents the study results on nearshore wave propagation and transformation, as well as the distribution of wave set-up during storms in the coastal area of Cua Dai, Hoi An, using SWAN and SWASH models. The models are thoroughly tested against wave and water level data series collected during a campaign in the project framework.

  • Storm surges are dangerous phenomena to the Vietnam coast, so they are taken in account by number of researchers. Rapid and accurate prediction of storm surges makes contribution in protection and mitigation of natural damages in coastal areas. Storm surges are considered as a complicated processes under action of air pressure, wind field, tide etc. and they may be well predicted using mathematical models.

  • Wetland ecosystems are a natural resource of global significance.Historically, their high level of plant and animal (especially bird) diversity is perhaps the major reason why wetland protection has become a high priority worldwide, supported by international agreements, such as the Ramsar Convention and the International Convention of Biological Diversity (Fig. 1.1).

  • Now, there were at least four wanderers moving through the village, and none of them his soon-to-be-deflowered betrothed. Ajen’s exasperation vanished when he saw a furtive shape slip between two buildings and skulk poorly towards the knoll. The dark cloak she wore flashed a glimpse of her bright-white bedclothes with every step as she neared the tree. His blood surge

  • As recent weather events have illustrated, coastal areas in both developing and more industrialized economies face a range of risks related to climate change (IPCC 2007a). Anticipated risks include an accelerated rise in sea level of up to 0.6 meters or more by 2100, a further rise in sea surface tempera- tures by up to 3° C, an intensification of tropical and extra tropical cyclones, larger extreme waves and storm surges, altered precipitation and run- off, and ocean acidification (Nicholls et al. 2007).

  • For each city, complex hydrometeorological models were then developed using a whole host of local information. These included (a) climate variables such as changes in temperature, precipi- tation, sea level rise, and storm surge; (b) socio- economic and developmental factors such as land subsidence, land use, and population increases; and (c) local topographical and hydrological information. Flooding in the metropolitan areas was chosen as the key variable to assess impact.

  • Wave setup is the increase of water level within the surf zone due to the transfer of wave-related momentum to the water column during wave-breaking. Wave setup contributes to the total water height in storm and become dangerous to coastal construction. This study presents some results on wave setup with storm surge using numerical model and empirical model. It also estimates the contribution of wave setup in total storm tide level at coastal and estuarine region of Hai Phong. Results show that wave setup at coastal and estuarine region in Hai Phong contributes about 25% to 40% of...

  • In recent years, after renovation policy launched by the Vietnamese government, the economy of Kien An - Do Son, Hai Phong coastal zone in the Northern Vietnam has quickly changed with high income and fast economical grow rate. With the economical development, the environment in many areas has been severely damaged. In addition, the so called "global change" has also strengthened the natural hazards especially torpedo, storms surges, salt intrusion due to the sea level change... increasing of the losses caused by natural hazards in this very sensitive zone.

  • It is likely that with climate change (which could lead to increased rainfall, river flows, and higher coastal storm surges) and development pressures, flood risk in England is going to increase in the future, with potentially the most significant changes likely to happen in the latter half of the century. The Environment Agency has prepared a Long-term investment strategy that will allow us to understand future levels of risk and what investment may be needed to manage it over the next 25 years and beyond.
