This study focused on mangrove cover mapping by using vegetation indices in Tien Yen district. Mangrove ecosystems play a vital role in many coastal regions, protecting against erosion and storm surges, providing nursery habitats of aquatic organisms, and offering livelihoods to local communities.

Typhoon-induced disasters including storm surge and high wave are obvious threats to coastal areas in Vietnam. Thus, many researchers have paid their attention to this issue. The approaching methods are varied, including statistical methods and also numerical methods. This study suggests the coupled models Delft3D-FLOW and WAVE, using the meteorological output data from the Weather Research Forecast (WRF) for investigating the typhoon induced disasters in the coastal areas in Viet Nam.

Seawalls have been erected to protect hundreds of towns and tourism areas stretching along the coast of Vietnam. During storm surges or high tides, wave overtopping and splash-up would often threaten the safety of infrastructures, traffic and residents on the narrow land behind. Therefore, this study investigates these wave-wall interactions via hydraulic small scale model tests at Thuyloi University. Remarkably, the structure models were shaped to have different seaward faces and bullnoses.

This research utilizes the disaster risk concept developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to determine and assess the storm surge risk in aquaculture in the coastal area from Quang Ninh to Ninh Binh province. The results indicated that the highest level of risk occurred in Thai Thuy district (Thai Binh province) and Quang Yen town (Quang Ninh province). The second highest level or risks occurred in Tien Hai district (Thai Binh province), Mong Cai city and Hai Ha district (Quang Ninh province).

The results show that in the period of 1951–2016 there were many typhoons which landed and induced high storm surge on the coast of the North and the North of Center of Vietnam. During one thousand years, there have been 4,678 typhoons entering the coastal zone from Quang Ninh to Ca Mau.

As recent weather events have illustrated, coastal areas in both developing and more industrialized economies face a range of risks related to climate change (IPCC 2007a).
