Engineered cementitious composite (ECC) creates many potential civil engineering applications due to its outstanding ultimate tensile strain capacity (normally exceeding 2%) compared to conventional concrete and fiber reinforced concrete. The high tensile ductility of ECC is mainly influenced by fiber characteristics.

The thesis investigates the growth promoting effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) in chickpea and wheat. Three main topics covered are: 1) Isolating local Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria; 2) Screening and characterization of isolates; 3) Assessment and identification of the selected strains.

The thesis "Strain Localization and Member Ductility" primarily intends to provide new insights into the mechanism of localized plastic strain, also known as necking, in different types of metallic materials, including mild steel Q235, high strength low alloy steel HSLA350, and aluminum alloy AL6061.

Strain-softening material models have conventionally had a pathological mesh sensitivity in finite element simulations and composite materials are indifferent to this problem. Spurious localization is inherent to the structural problem in strain-driven softening.

A review of some recent data from multiaxial fatigue data from different notched materials is carried out in the paper. The approach based on the strain energy density (SED) averaged over a control volume is first used to summarise uniaxial and multiaxial fatigue strength data of welded joints made of structural steel and aluminium alloys.

Two procedures to evaluate fracture resistance of notched components are proposed in this contribution: the Strain Energy Density (SED) over a control volume and the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM). With the aim to simplify the application of the two fracture criteria, the concept of the ‘equivalent local mode I’ is presented.

The present work summarizes some recent experimental, theoretical and numerical results on brittle fracture of isostatic polycrystalline graphite. The analyses have been carried out on V-notched samples under mixed mode (I+II), torsion and compression loading, considering various combinations of the notch tip radius, opening angle and notch tilt angle.

The amino acid glycine is identified as a component of the inner core oligosaccharide in meningococcal lipopolysac-charide (LPS). Ester-linked glycine residues were consis-tently foundbymass spectrometry experiments tobe located on the distal heptose residue (HepII) in LPS from several strainsofNeisseriameningitidis.Nuclearmagnetic resonance studies confirmedand extended this observation locating the glycine residue at the 7-position of theHepIImolecule inL3 and L4 immunotype strains.

Pathogenesis Hib strains cause systemic disease by invasion and hematogenous spread from the respiratory tract to distant sites such as the meninges, bones, and joints. The type b polysaccharide capsule is an important virulence factor affecting the bacterium's ability to avoid opsonization and cause systemic disease. Nontypable strains cause disease by local invasion of mucosal surfaces. Otitis media results when bacteria reach the middle ear by way of the eustachian tube. Adults with chronic bronchitis experience recurrent lower respiratory tract infection due to nontypable strains.
