In the paper "Nonlinear static analysis of bidirectional functionally graded sandwich plates using a higher-order finite element formulation" the nonlinear static behaviors of bidirectional functionally graded sandwich (BFGSW) plates are investigated using a finite element procedure. The plates consist of three layers, a homogeneous core and two bidirectional functionally graded face sheets. A nonlinear finite element formulation in sense of the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation is derived in the basis of a higher-order shear deformation theory.

The nonlinear buckling behaviors of the functionally graded graphene platelet reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) doubly curved shallow shells under external pressure in the thermal environment are introduced and investigated in this paper. The Donnell shell theory and the strain-displacement relationship of von Karman are used. At the bottom surface of FG-GPLRC doubly curve shallow shells, the FG-GPLRC stiffener system in the transverse, longitudinal, or/and oblique directions is installed to increase the bearing capacity of the shallow shells.

The obsevation from experimental results indicates that: (1) interface shear behavior between well-graded coral soils and steel structure follows the strain hardening rules; (2) the magnitudes of friction resistances between two materials are related to the gradation and grain size of coral soils, for coral sand limit sliding displacement is around 1mm with interface friction angle of 27.9o while for coral sandy-gravel these values are 2-3mm and 32.

In this study, rectangular plates subjected to static loads and supported on a discontinuous two-parameter elastic foundation are analyzed. The formulae for the computations are developed from improved shear deformation theory, where the displacement w is divided into bending and shear strain components.

The aim of the research was the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams acquired with the help of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired for damage detection. The displacement mode shapes acquired were then converted into curvature mode shapes with the help of a Central Difference Approximation method (CDA).

Free vibration of functionally graded beams resting on winkler foundation around the buckling domain
This paper investigates free vibration of functionally graded beams (FG beams) resting on Winkler foundation around the buckling domain. The governing equations of motion based on Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories together with Von Karman’s strain–displacement relation are derived from Lagrange’s equations.

The finite element analysis greatly enhances the understanding of the observations while the measurements give the finite element analysis substance. A full-scale test embankment reinforced with Tenax TT 201 polymer geogrids and weathered Bangkok clay as backfill material has been carried out. Finite element method has been employed to reanalyze all the measured data from the above test embankment. The agreement between the finite element results and the field data is quite good. The results indicate that the overconsolidation ratios affect much on the consolidation settlement.

In the present work, the large displacement behaviour of FGSW beams in thermal environment is studied by a finite element formulation. The beams considered herein consist of three layers, a homogeneous core and two FGM skin layers. The material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent, and they are graded in the thickness direction by a power gradation law. Based on Antman beam model, a nonlinear beam element using linear interpolation is formulated in the context of the total Lagrange formulation.

This study presents a novel application of mesh-free method using the smoothed-radial basis functions for the computational homogenization analysis of materials. The displacement field corresponding to the scattered nodes within the representative volume element (RVE) is split into two parts including mean term and fluctuation term, and then the fluctuation one is approximated using the integrated radial basis function (iRBF) method.

This paper deals with a geometrically nonlinear finite element formulation for the analysis of torsional behaviour of RC members. Using the corotational framework, the formulation is developed for the inclusion of nonlinear geometry effects in a multi-fiber finite element beam model. The assumption of small strains but large displacements and rotations is adopted. The principle is an element-independent algorithm, where the element formulation is computed in a local reference frame which is uncoupled from the rigid body motions (translations and rotations) of the reference frame.

A corotational beam-column element is established to derive the element stiffness matrix considering the effects of axial force on bending moment (P-∆ effect), the additional axial strain caused by end rotations and the nonlinear moment – rotation relationship of beam-to-column connections.

The displacement field is based on classical beam theory. Both plane stress and plane strain state are used to achieve constitutive equations. The governing equations are derived from Lagrange’s equations. Ritz method is applied to obtain the critical buckl. ing loads of thin-walled beams. Numerical results are compared to those in available literature and investigate the effects of fiber angle, length-to-height’s ratio, boundary condition on the critical buckling loads of thin-walled channel beams

Ground improvement technique by prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) in combination with vacuum preloading is widely used to facilitate consolidation process and reduce residual settlement. However, this technique seem hardly be estimated by both analytical method and numerical method because it has complex boundary conditions (such as vacuum pressure changing with time). Moreover, lateral displacements caused by this technique are also significant problem.
