Photoelasticity images of pulsed laser ablation in water and in air were simulated by Finite Element Method. In the paper "Compare transient stress induced in in-air and in-water laser ablation using simulation method", the Von Mises stress distribution in the target is deduced from the simulated images and is compared between the two-ablation regimes. The result confirms that pulse laser ablation in the water can induced a stress about 100 times higher than that induced in ablation in the air.

The fatigue failure around rail-end-bolt holes is particularly dangerous since it leads to derailment of trains and consequently to inevitable accidents. It is well-known that the fatigue life of structural holed components, subjected to cyclic load, can be increased by generating compressive hoop stresses around the holes.

Trichoderma species, a class of plant beneficial fungi, may provide opportunistic symbionts to induce plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. Here, we determined the possible mechanisms responsible for the indole acetic acid (IAA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate-deaminase (ACC-deaminase) producing strain of Trichoderma longibrachiatum T6 (TL-6) in promoting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and enhancing plant tolerance to NaCl stress.

The RsMYB1 transcription factor (TF) controls the regulation of anthocyanin in radishes (Raphanus sativus), and its overexpression in tobacco and petunias strongly enhances anthocyanin production. However, there are no data on the involvement of RsMYB1 in the mechanisms underlying abiotic stress tolerance, despite strong sequence similarity with other MYBs that confer such tolerance. In this study, we used the anthocyanin-enriched transgenic petunia lines PM6 and PM2, which overexpress RsMYB1.

Hsp105aisoneof themajormammalianheat shockproteins that belongs to the HSP105/110 family, and is expressed at especially high levels in the brain as compared with other tissues in mammals. Previously, we showed that Hsp105a prevents stress-induced apoptosis in neuronal PC12 cells, and is a novel anti-apoptotic neuroprotective factor in the mammalian brain.

Exposure of mammalian cells to oxidant stress causes early (iron catalysed) lysosomal rupture followed by apoptosis or necrosis. Enhanced intracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), presumably of mitochondrial origin, is also observed when cells are exposed to nonoxidant pro-apoptotic agonists of cell death. We hypothesized that ROS generation in this latter case might promote the apoptotic cascade and could arise from effects of released lysosomal materials on mitochondria.

Induction of CYP3A genes by the ligand-activated preg-nane-X-receptor (PXR)involves the interaction of other as yet unidentified liver transcription factors. Here we show that the CYP3A1promoter contains two active sites con-trolled by the CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein a (C/ EBPa), previously shown to regulate a number of liver stress response genes. We have identified two functional C/EBP binding sites at theCYP3A1promoter that confer luciferase activity to C/EBPacotransfected CHO cells.

Oxidative stress and imbalance between free radical generation and detoxi-fication may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). Mitochondria, carrying the homoplasmic 11778⁄ND4, 3460⁄ND1 and 14484⁄ND6 mtDNA point mutations associ-ated with LHON, were used to generate osteosarcoma-derived cybrids. Enhanced mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species has recently been demonstrated in these cybrids [Beretta S, Mattavelli L, Sala G, Trem-olizzo L, Schapira AHV, Martinuzzi A, Carelli V & Ferrarese C (2004) Brain127, 2183–2192]. ...

Plasma concentrations of free fatty acids are increased in metabolic syn-drome, and the increased fatty acids may cause cellular damage via the induction of oxidative stress. The present study was designed to determine whether the increase in fatty acids can modify the free sulfhydryl group in position 34 of albumin (Cys34) and enhance the redox-cycling activity of the copper–albumin complex in high-fat diet-induced obese mice.

The mechanisms underlying increased cardioprotection in younger female mice are unclear. We hypothesized that serine-threonine protein kinase (protein kinase B; Akt) triggers a metabolic gene switch (decreased fatty acids, increased glucose) in female hearts to enhance mitochondrial bio-energetic capacity, conferring protection against oxidative stress.

Bacterial RNases are promising tools for the development of anticancer drugs. Neoplastic transformation leads to enhanced accumulation of rRNA and tRNA, and altered expression of regulatory noncoding RNAs. Cleav-age of RNA in cancer cells is the main reason for the cytotoxic effects of exogenic RNases.

TheOryza sativalectin, abbreviated Orysata, is a mannose-specific, jacalin-related lectin expressed in rice plants after exposure to certain stress condi-tions. Expression of a fusion construct containing the rice lectin sequence linked to enhanced green fluorescent protein in Bright Yellow 2 tobacco cells revealed that Orysata is located in the nucleus and the cytoplasm of the plant cell, indicating that it belongs to the class of nucleocytoplasmic jacalin-related lectins.

The need for organizations to innovate and furthermore to ceaselessly innovate is stressed throughout the modern management literature on innovation. This need comes from increasing competition and customer demands and new market areas. Closely linked, but not synonymous, with innovation is the body of knowledge referred to collectively as knowledge management. Within this discourse knowledge is considered as a potential key competitive advantage, by helping to increase innovation within the organization.
