Ebook "Plant electrophysiology: Theory and methods" starts with a historical introduction to plant electrophysiology, followed by two distinct parts. The first one deals with methods in plant electrophysiology, including, amongst others, measuring membrane potentials and ion fluxes, path-clamp technique, and electrochemical sensors. The second part covers experimental results and their theoretical interpretation.

The phosphors are widely used in emissive displays. However, all currently used phosphors still need considerable improvement, such as lower current saturation, higher efficiency, and better chromaticity.

Stress is a problem that affects both physical and mental health, causing negative emotional states. Stress can impair the driver’s ability to perceive and handle situations in driving safety. Therefore, the detection and assessment of stress levels play an important role in improving comfort, well-being, and enhancing the driving experience for drivers.

We investigated the effect of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein 29 (ERp29) on thyroglobulin (Tg) secretion and its negative regulation by microRNAs (miRNAs). ERp29 overexpression promoted Tg secretion from thyrocytes of PCCL3 cells via activation of ER stress sensors, including activation of transcription factor 6 fragmentation, XBP1 mRNA splicing by inositol-requiring enzyme 1, and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha as downstream actions of RNA-dependent protein kinase-like ER kinase.

Plants evolved from long-term adaptation to form regulatory mechanisms of perception, transduction, and response to stresses. The CBL–CIPK signaling system is a basic calcium sensor that plays an important role in sensing adverse environmental stimuli. CBLs can perceive and bind Ca2+ under adversity and then specifically interact with CIPKs. The activated CBL–CIPK complex phosphorylates downstream target proteins (such as ion channels and transporters), or regulates transcription factors and stress responsive genes.

Calmodulin-like (CML) proteins are a primary family of plant-specific Ca2+ sensors that specifically bind to Ca2+ and deliver a Ca2+ signal. CML proteins have been identified and characterized in many plant species, such as the model plant Arabidopsis and rice. Based on considerable evidence, the roles of CML proteins are crucial in plant growth and development and in the response to various external stimuli. Nevertheless, the characterization and expression profiling of CML genes in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) remain limited.

Calcineurin B-like proteins (CBLs) are major Ca2+ sensors that interact with CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) to regulate growth and development in plants. The CBL-CIPK network is involved in stress response, yet little is understood on how CBL-CIPK function in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), a staple vegetable crop that is threatened by biotic and abiotic stressors.

Ca2+ played as a ubiquitous secondary messenger involved in plant growth, development, and responses to various environmental stimuli. Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPK) were important Ca2+ sensors, which could directly translate Ca2+ signals into downstream phosphorylation signals.

This paper presents the study results on the fabrication of a structural integrity assessment apparatus by determining stress concentration zones in pressure pipeline and equipment. The apparatus uses a triaxial magnetic field sensor to measure magnetic field components in three axes Ox, Oy, and Oz, in the working range of the magnetic field from -300 µT to 300 µT.

This study evaluates the displacement sensitivity of a new compliant microgripper. The microgripper is designed based on a four-bar mechanism and the concept of a compliant mechanism. The effects of the width of the right circular hinge, the thickness of microgripper, and the material properties on the dis-placement sensitivity are considered via using the finite element method. In the beginning, the stress and deformation of the compliant microgripper are evaluated.

The mixture of volatile organic compounds in the headspace gas of urine may be able to distinguish lung cancer patients from relevant control populations. Methods: Subjects with biopsy confirmed untreated lung cancer, and others at risk for developing lung cancer, provided a urine sample. A colorimetric sensor array was exposed to the headspace gas of neat and pre-treated urine samples.

Load applied to the connecting-rod and the pressure in the lubricant oil film change the stress in the connecting-rod during the operating cycle. This problem is one of the characteristics we need to consider when studying the connecting-rod big end bearing. A specific experimental device and the connecting-rod model of photoelastic material are used to determine the load diagram, measure the oil film pressure, and visualize the state of stress. The connecting-rod is subjected to simulation load as in the engine.

Calmodulin (CaM) is an important calcium sensor protein that transduces Ca2+ signals in plant stress signaling pathways. A previous study has revealed that transgenic rice over-expressing the calmodulin gene OsCam1–1 (LOC_Os03g20370) is more tolerant to salt stress than wild type.

Many areas of agricultural fields are effectively over or under irrigated due to spatial variability in water infiltration and runoff of rainfall and irrigation, crop water use and irrigation depth. Under-irrigated areas are subject to water stress, resulting in production loss, while over-irrigated areas suffer from plant disease and nutrient leaching. This research presents the design of microcontroller based soil moisture sensor was developed at College of agricultural Engineering, Bapatla.

A new structure of a micro-strain beam type of Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) strain gauge is proposed and simulated. The stress and strain distributions of MEMS strain gauge are evaluated in x and y directions by 2D FEM simulation, respectively. The results showed that the longitudinal stress and strain distributions of strain beam enhance significantly, while the transverse stress and strain distributions are almost unchanged in the whole structure of MEMS strain gauge.

Protein deglycase DJ-1 (Parkinson disease protein 7) is a 20 kDa protein encoded by PARK7 gene. It is also known as a redox-sensitive chaperone and sensor that protect cells against oxidative stress-induced cell death in many human diseases. Though increasing evidence implicates that DJ-1 may also participate in ocular diseases, the overview of DJ-1 in ocular diseases remains elusive.
