  • This study investigates the ultimate bearing capacity of a rigid strip footing on a sandy slope using the Rigid Plastic Finite Element Method (RPFEM). To accurately represent a wide range of frictional conditions at the footing roughness, a new interface element was introduced, capable of accommodating both perfectly rough and perfectly smooth conditions.

  • In this paper, a computational approach using a combination of the upper bound theorem and the bubbleenhanced quadrilateral finite element (FEM-Qi6) is proposed to evaluate bearing capacity factors of strip footing in cohesive-frictional soil. The new element is built based on the quadrilateral element (Q4) by adding a pair of internal nodes to solve the volumetric locking phenomenon.

  • This paper presents the results of laboratory model tests on the influence of deep excavation-induced lateral soil movements on the behavior of a model strip footing adjacent to the excavation and supported on reinforced granular soil. Initially, the response of the strip footings supported on un-reinforced sand and subjected to vertical loads (which were constant during the test) due to adjacent deep excavation-induced lateral soil movement were obtained.

  • The paper presents a study of the behavior of model strip footings supported on a loose sandy slope and subjected to both monotonic and cyclic loads. The effects of the partial replacement of a compacted sand layer and the inclusion of geosynthetic reinforcement were investigated. Different combinations of the initial monotonic loads and the amplitude of cyclic loads were chosen to simulate structures in which loads change cyclically such as machine foundations.

  • In this paper, the ultimate load capacities of shell foundations on unreinforced and reinforced sand were determined by laboratory model tests. A series of loading tests were carried out on model shell footing with and without single layer of reinforcement. The tests were done for shell foundation at different shell embedment depth and subgrade density. The results were compared with those for flat foundations without reinforcement. The model test results were verified using finite element analysis using program PLAXIS.
