This study aimed at identifying appropriate combinations of cultivar and insecticide spraying times for the management of economically important insect pests of cowpea in northern Ghana. The study was conducted in two successive rainy seasons at two locations situated in the Sudan and Guinea Savannah zones of northern Ghana.

The impact of Improved agricultural practice (IAP) with emphasis on soil analysis based organic manure and chemical fertilizer application, replacement of 25% chemical fertilizer with Bio-fertilizers and Integrated Pest Management, was studied for 3 successive years in 5 fields in Ricelentil – Okra cropping system in Gangetic Alluvial zones of West Bengal, India. IAP was seen to have significant beneficial effects on elevating soil organic carbon content and increase soil pH towards normality.

Population dynamics of sucking pests of sesame viz. thrips, whitefly, leaf hoppers and aphids were studied. Correlation between the pest population and weather parameters was analyzed and regression equations were developed. Incidence of aphids, leaf hoppers and thrips on sesame crop during kharif season has started on 25th SMW.

In the present studies three insect pests viz., blue bug, Chrysocoris purpureus (Westw), leaf webber cum fruit borer, Pempelia morosalis (Saalm Uller) and broad mites, Euseius sp were recorded as major pests. Along with this spider, Oxyopes lineatipes was recorded as predator. The pest succession studies revealed that mean maximum and minimum population of C. purpureus was recorded in 1st fortnight of September (34.24) and 2nd fortnight of October (19.36), nymph and adult / plant, respectively. Endophytes are the organisms that live within plant tissues and spend at least a half of their life time without causing disease under any circumstances. So, the endophytes are commonly defined as those organisms whose infections are inconspicuous and symptomless in host tissue and internal microbial colonization. Both prokaryote (bacteria) and eukaryotes (fungi) colonize the plant tissues exhibiting a little variation in their colonization mode. The former colonize intracellularly in vascular tissues and the later shows asymptomatic colonization either inter or intracellularly.

DNA barcoding has appeared to be a useful tool in resolving the issues related to the identification of taxonomically difficult insect species.
