Cold is a major abiotic stress limiting the production of tropical and subtropical crops in new production areas. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) originates from the tropics but is cultivated primarily in the sub-tropics where it frequently encounters cold stress. Besides regulating plant growth, miRNAs play an important role in environmental adaption.

Nitrogen is an essential element for sugarcane growth and development and is generally applied in the form of urea often much more than at recommended rates, causing serious soil degradation, particularly soil acidification, as well as groundwater and air pollution.

=Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an important commercial crop, cultivated across the world. Smut disease is one of the major diseases of sugarcane. Severe smut infection affects the sugar recovery as well as yield loss ranging from 10 to70 %. The present study was based on the evaluation of seventy five sugarcane genotypes against smut disease by following seed sett inoculation technique under field condition to screen out the newer sources of resistance as well as susceptible for the development of the smut resistant varieties.

Cultivated sugarcane (Saccharum spp. complex, 2n = 80-120) belongs to the genus Saccharum of the family Poaceae. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. complex) is an important cash crop of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world for its distinct characteristic of high sugar concentration accumulated in the stalk. Genetic diversity gives species the ability to adapt to changing environments, including new pests and diseases and new climatic conditions.

The study was undertaken to determine the potential of poly crosses and station cross in sugarcane, obtained by pollinating the female parents Co 94012, Co8371, 86V46 and Co 7201 × Co 99006to generate variants for eight traits and frequency distribution pattern of variants, hence generated. 642 seedlings raised from three poly crosses and one station cross, comprising high sugared commercial varieties were investigated.

A field experiment was conducted at SBI, RC, Karnal, to assess performance of newly developed six mid early maturing sugarcane cultivars i.e. Co 0116, Co 0118, Co 0237, Co 0238, Co 0239 and Co J 64 (Standard), with two row spacing (75 and 90 cm) under three fertility levels i.e.75, 100 and 125% of recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) NPK (N150 P21.8 K41.5) with plant-ratoon-wheat system. Varieties ‘Co 0238’ and ‘Co 0118’ recorded the maximum and significantly higher cane yield (93.1 and 88.9 t/ha) and commercial cane sugar (11.76 and 12.
