Superficial fungal infections

The objectives of this study includes, to compare the detection rate and visualisation of fungal elements from samples of superficial fungal infection patients by KOH mount using standard technique and cellophane tape method and to compare the time taken for reporting of the same by these methods.

The present study was carried out to know the prevalence of superficial fungal infection caused by dermatophytes and to speciate them which may help to control the infection. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of superficial fungal skin infections caused by dermatophytes, to study the clinic-mycological pattern and to speciate the isolated ones using standard mycological tests. This was a prospective study carried out over a period of one year from June 2014 to May 2015.

The present article reports on the laboratory examination of skin scraping sample collected from a camel clinically infected with dermatophyte infection. The samples were examined by direct microscopical examination by placing the skin scrapings and/or hairs in 20% KOH on a glass slide and gentle heating, without boiling. The dermatophyte identification was made based on the colony characteristics and microscopic features of the fungal isolates according to the methods. The present study revealed the presence of superficial dermatophyte skin infection in the affected camel.

Dermatophytes are among the common fungal agents implicated in superficial skin infections worldwide. Infections commonly occur in hot and humid climates. They include species of Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton. The present study was done to assess the clinical profile of dermatophytic infections and to identify the species of fungi that are prevalent in this region. A total of 80 samples consisting of skin scrapings, nail scrapings and hair follicles were collected from patients presenting with different ringworm/ tinea infections.

Dermatophytes are a group of closely related keratinophilic fungi that can invade keratinized humans and animals tissues such as skin, hair and nails causing dermatophytosis. They are an important cause of superficial fungal infection. Conventional methods like potassium hydroxide (KOH) direct microscopy and fungal culture lacks the ability to make an early and specific diagnosis, as it takes about four weeks for the culture to grow on Sabourauds dextrose agar.

Fungal infections or mycoses are classified as Superficial, Subcutaneous, and Systemic depending on the degree of invasion of the host. Superficial fungal infections are most common in tropical and subtropical countries. Superficial fungal infections of the skin are one of the most common dermatological conditions seen in clinical practice. It affects 20- 25% of the population. In this study, 1473 Suspected superficial fungal infection cases were identified among approximately 3500 patients screened during August 2017 to August 2019.

Dermatophytoses broadly includes superficial fungal infection of skin, hair and nail. In India dermatophytic infection are very common superficial fungal infections due to hot and humid climate in most of the part of country. A study was planned to find clinicomycological profile of dermatophytic infection in our arid zone along with study of predisposing factors and to find out species commonly involved. To guide the clinician regarding therapeutic options antifungal susceptibility was carried out.

Powdery mildew disease is becomes a serious and widespread problem in many parts of India and abroad. Powdery mildew fungi can grow superficially on leaves of host plants and at severity of infection causes morphological, anatomical and physiological damages of plants. In this connection present attempt has been made to study the diversity of powdery mildew from Phaltan area of Satara District of Maharashtra. Survey was carried during June, 2018 to April, 2019. During the study total 54 host plant species and 07 fungal genera of powdery mildew were reported.

Dermatophytosis refers to superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissues, caused by group of keratinophilic dermatophytes. The prevalence of dermatophyte infection varies with different geographic area and climatic conditions. It is one of the common fungal infection but in recent times it is one of the neglected disease. The incidence of superficial mycoses has increased recently due to frequent usage of antibiotics and various immunosuppressive conditions. In the background of immunosuppression, detection of these agents becomes necessary for effective management and prevention of further invasions.
