Improving teaching and learning methodologies is not just a wish but rather strife for most educational institutions globally. To attain this, the Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science implemented a Technology-enhanced Problem-Based Learning methodology in the programme B Tech Occupational Nursing, in 2006. This is a two-year post-basic nursing program. The students are geographically dispersed and the curriculum design is the typically student-centred outcomes-based education.

A healthy digestive system is fundamental to supporting human life. Its ability to extract nutrients from the food we eat affects our general well-being in health and our response to illness in ill-health. Disorders of the digestive system range from mild and self-limiting to severe and life-threatening, but affect everyone to some extent and at some point during their life. This chapter provides a general overview of the digestive system, and then explores its components in greater detail. Common conditions are examined through patient scenarios.

Since 1997, ophthalmic nursing and ophthalmic care practices have moved on in leaps and bounds. There have been several reasons for this including the government targets to bring down hospital waiting times, new approaches to patient management with a move away from inpatient care to mainly day case management and primary care settings. Ophthalmic nursing has been transformed by the involvement of others in ophthalmic nursing care such as clinical support workers, assistant practitioners and surgical care assistants.

Through a long and rewarding career in nursing I have been privileged to support and learn from many about the wellness-illness patterns that mark the human experience. It is frequently an illness event that slows us down, inviting us to step outside normal routines to reevaluate the beliefs and patterns that create the life we live. Cares of the day become insignificant when one is confronted with one’s mortality. The focus shifts to the deeper questions of the soul.

The authors, who all have wide experience in teaching and practising adult nursing, collaborated to write this book, which evolved from a clinical skills module. It became apparent that students loved learning the introductory nursing skills, but there were few easily accessible texts to support their learning. This book is therefore aimed at nursing students embarking on their nursing education, although some of it will also be suitable for care assistants who are involved in delivering direct nursing care to patients.

The patient journey from presentation to the general practitioner (GP), referral for investigation, through to diagnosis and specialist referral is a multistep process. The effective management of patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer requires a multidisciplinary approach. The investigation and management of each new patient requires access to a multidisciplinary team consisting of surgeons, gastroenterologists, endoscopists, oncologists, nurses, dietitians, radiologists, pathologists, and anaesthetists.

Of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the two specifically con- cerned with improving the health of women and children are the furthest from being achieved by 2015. They are in urgent need of innovative and strategic actions, supported by political will and resources for greater impact. In September 2010, in an effort to accelerate progress, the Secretary-General of the United Nations launched the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health. The main goal of this strategy is to save 16 million lives by 2015 in the world’s 49 poorest coun- tries.

There are several ways policies may cover home health care. Some long- term care insurance policies only pay for care in your home from licensed home health agencies. Some also will pay for care from licensed health care providers not from a licensed agency. These include licensed practical nurses; occupational, speech, or physical therapists; or licensed home health care aides. Other policies may pay for services from home health care aides who may not be licensed or are not from licensed agencies. Home health care aides help with personal care.
