Highly crosslinked, inorganic-organic hybrid and intrinsically fluorescent polyphosphazene nanospheres bearing hydroxyl groups on the surface are facilely generated via a one-pot polycondensation of octachlorocyclotetraphosphazene, fluorescein and quercetin. The resulting nanospheres were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and ultravioletvisible spectroscopy (UV-vis) techniques.

Silica supports used e.g. in chromatography, separation and bioassay lack complete efficacy unless they are surface functionalised. Thus, chemistries are grafted to the surface to enhance their properties and capacity in specific applications.

Synthesis of the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-(4-methyl-7,8-dihydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one) benzimidazolium chloride followed by the conversion of ammonium salts on the imidazole ring hooked to the coumarin group was modified by postmodification of the silica matrix where 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane was used as not only a surface modification agent, but also as an ATRP halogen source. The synergetic effect of charged ammonium groups as well as hydroxyl groups present on the coumarin was investigated in terms of ATRP polymerization.

The aim of this research was to design an electrochemical immunosensor for determination of tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated protein-1(TRAP1) antigen, a heat shock protein linked to tumour necrosis factor. The indium-tin oxide covered polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) electrode surface was cleaned and was prepared for the introduction of hydroxyl groups on its surface by using NH4 OH/H2 O2 /H2 O. As a silanization agent for covalent attachment of anti-TRAP1 on the surface of the ITO working electrode, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3-GOPS) was used.

In this work, the polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide (PANi/rGO) bilayer was directly electrodeposited on carbon screen-printed electrodes (SPE). Some details in growth of PANi/rGO bilayer were revealed from cyclic voltammograms and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The growth of stacked rGO film at high compactness on the electrode surface is mainly accompanied with reduction of epoxy functional groups at basal planes of graphitic flakes.

Rice husks were combined with unsaturated polyester resin, synthesized from glycolysed product of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste to form rice husk (RH)/polyester composites. PET from post-consumer soft drink bottles was recycled through glycolysis, followed by polyesterified with maleic anhydride and then cross-linked with styrene to produce a formulation for the resin. Characterizations of the synthesized resin were performed by hydroxyl, acid values and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) techniques.

Agricultural wastes are considered as viable alternatives because of their abundant availability, low cost and also with various functional groups such as carboxylic acid, ester, carboxylate, hydroxyl, phenolic and amino that can act as adsorption sites for heavy metal ion. Banana peel waste based biosorbents to remove cadmium from waste water was taken up for the present study.

To realistically simulate the impacts of marine isoprene and primary organic aerosols (POA) on atmospheric chemistry, a unified model framework with online emissions, comprehensive treatment of gas-phase chemistry, and advanced aerosol microphysics is required. In this work, the global-through-urban WRF/Chem model (GU-WRF/Chem) implemented with the online emissions of marine isoprene and size-resolved marine POA is applied to examine such impacts.

Biosorption of cadmium and lead from aqueous solution by fresh water alga Anabaena sphaerica biomass
The present work represents the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution onto the biomass of the blue green alga Anabaena sphaerica as a function of pH, biosorbent dosage, contact time, and initial metal ion concentrations. Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of both metals by A. sphaerica biomass. The biosorption isotherms studies indicated that the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) follows the Langmuir and Freundlish models. The maximum biosorption capacities (qmax) were 111.1 and 121.

Zirconium dispersed in aluminum-pillared montmorillonite was prepared as a catalyst for phenol hydroxylation. The effects of varying the Zr content on the catalyst’s physicochemical character and activity were studied with XRD, BET surface area analysis, surface acidity measurements and scanning electron microscopy before investigating the performance for phenol conversion. The zirconia dispersion significantly affects the specific surface area, the total surface acidity and surface acidity distribution related to the formation of porous zirconia particles on the surface.

In this work, we present a new nanofluid based on silver nanoparticles decorated on the functionalized carbon nanotubes-graphene sheet (hybrid) materials. Briefly, carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets were first functionalized with a hydroxyl group and carboxyl group respectively. The hybrid material was decorated with silver nanoparticles via chemical reduction method with the assistance of sodium hydroxyl. Finally, the obtained Aghybrid material was dispersed in ethylene glycol solution (EG) to form the nanofluid without any surfactant.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have attached many attentions due to their interesting physicochemical properties. However, ionic liquids have several disadvantages including high viscosity, difficult to purify, separate and recycle, and expensive. Therefore, supported ionic liquids (SIL) have been developed to overcome these problems. SIL based on cellulose material was conventionally synthesized by silanization reaction between ionic liquid trialkoxyl silane and hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose.

The adsorption of uranium (VI) by calcium alginate beads was examined by batch experiments. The effects of environmental conditions on U (VI) adsorption were studied, including contact time, pH, initial concentration of U (VI), and temperature. The alginate beads were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that hydroxyl and alkoxy groups are present at the surface of the beads.

Exposure to quartz particles induces a pathological process named silicosis. Alveolar macrophages initiate the disease through their activation, which is the origin of the later dysfunctions. Ascorbic acid is known to selectively dissolve the quartz surface. During the reaction, ascorbic acid progressively disappears and hydroxyl radicals are generated from the quartz surface. These observations may be relevant to mammalian quartz toxicity, as sub-stantial amounts of ascorbic acid are present in the lung epithelium. ...
