Surface wave radar

This study focuses on monitoring the variation of surface soil moisture (0- 1 cm) and ground soil moisture (0÷1 m) in the soil in Dak Nong province using Sentinel-1 radar images received in December 2017. Active radar signals utilized in this method were sent and received using short wave pulses. The intensity of the received signal is compared to determine the scattering coefficient of the surface.

In high frequency surface wave radars, the detection capability is limited by the first-order sea clutter spikes. The energy, location, and Doppler frequency of first-order sea clutter depend on the sea states, which is difficult to model using a fixed expression to eliminate sea clutter.

Microwave remote sensing or SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data has been employed extensively to map open water bodies and to monitor flood extents, where cloud cover often prohibits the use of satellite sensors operating at other wavelengths. Where total inundation occurs, a low backscatter return is expected due to the specular reflection of SAR signal on the water surface. However, low local incidence angle and wind induced waves can cause a roughening of the water surface which result in a high return signal.

Satellite altimetry was developed in the 1960s soon after the flight of artificial satellites became a reality. From the vantage point in space, a radar altimeter is able to measure the shape of the sea surface globally and frequently. Such measurements have a wide range of applications to oceanography, geodesy, and geophysics. The results are often revolutionary. For example, in oceanography; it takes a ship weeks or months to cross the ocean making measurements while the ocean is constantly changing its circulation, temperature, and salinity.
