  • In putting together this manual of endoscopic surgery, we have sought to cover the three essential components of the new surgical approach: the technological aspects, the basic endoscopic surgical skills, and the operative techniques. Visualization of the operative field, exposure and execution of remote manipulations are dependent on op timal function of the ancillary apparatus without which endoscopic surgery cannot be practised.

  • Atypical femur fractures are a rare occurrence, especially in bisphosphonate-naïve men, and merit reporting owing to their unusual presentation and clinical implications. This case report highlights a unique instance of atypical femur fractures in a 73-year-old male with no prior bisphosphonate exposure.

  • Current pre-operative Sentinel Lymph Node (SLN) mapping using dual tracing is associated with drawbacks (radiation exposure, logistic challenges). Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) is a non-inferior alternative for SLN mapping in breast cancer patients. Limited research has been performed on SPIO use and pre-operative MRI in melanoma patients to identify SLNs.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections are common because of exposure to aquatic environment, while severe infections caused by Aeromonas veronii are rare. Early diagnosis, surgical intervention, and administration of appropriate antibiotics are crucial for patients who are suspected of having skin and soft tissue infection, or septicemia caused by Aeromonas veronii.

  • Ischemic or volatile anesthetic preconditioning is defined as tissue protection from impending ischemic cell damage by repetitive short periods of tissue exposure to ischemia or volatile anesthetics. Objective of this study was to elucidate, if ischemic preconditioning and pharmacological preconditioning with sevoflurane have effects on muscle tissue oxygen saturation in patients undergoing surgical revascularization of the lower limb.

  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) requires pneumoperitoneum and the Trendelenburg position to optimize surgical exposure, which can increase intracranial pressure (ICP). Anesthetic agents also influence ICP. We compared the effects of propofol and sevoflurane on sonographic optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) as a surrogate for ICP in prostate cancer patients who underwent RALP.

  • Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma also called cancer eye, represents the most economically important neoplasm in large animals. Hereditary factors, environmental factors (e.g. latitude, altitude, exposure to sunlight), lack of eyelid pigmentation, age and dietary habits have all been reported to play a role in the etiopathogenesis of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma. Twenty four animals were subjected to surgical excision and autogenous vaccine was administered weekly once for four weeks. All the animals recovered completely with no recurrence for a follow up period of one year.

  • During robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP), steep Trendelenburg position and carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum are inevitable for surgical exposure, both of which can impair cardiopulmonary function. This study was aimed to compare the effects of pressure-controlled ventilation with volume guarantee (PCV with VG) and 1:1 equal ratio ventilation (ERV) on oxygenation, respiratory mechanics and hemodynamics during RALP.

  • The agency has also proposed establishing a new safety standard (FMVSS No. 126) to require electronic stability control (ESC) on all light duty passenger vehicles beginning in MY 2009. 8 ESC can prevent a large percentage of loss-of-control crashes which expose vehicles to the off- road tripping mechanisms that cause most rollovers. By reducing exposure to run-off-the-road crashes, an ESC requirement would result in a large reduction in rollover fatalities.

  • Mehta and Shahpar (2004) present a cost-effectiveness analysis of household air pollution control interventions by WHO regions with significant SFU prevalence. Benefits are healthy years gained from reduced risk of ALRI in children and COPD in adult females and males based on regional data from WHO. An improved stove is assumed to reduce SFU pollution exposure and health effects by 75 percent. Per household annualized cost of cooking systems range across regions from $40-90 for LPG, $10-20 for kerosene, and $3-24 for improved stove ($3-5 in Africa and Asia).

  • The discussion below describes the physical effects of key air pollutants on human health. This discussion is mostly based on Morgan and Jalaludin’s (2001) review. Where possible, sensitive subgroups in the population have been identified, including people with existing disease (mainly respiratory and cardiovascular), people with infections such as influenza and pneumonia, asthmatics, the elderly and children. Exposure-response estimates for the key pollutants are presented in Appendix 3.

  • Vaccinating girls and women before sexual debut, and therefore before exposure to HPV infection, provides an excellent opportunity to decrease the incidence of cervical cancer over time. As these vaccines protect against HPV types responsible for about 70% of cervical cancers, there will be a continued need to screen women who have been vaccinated as well as those who have not been vaccinated.

Actinic keratoses are usually small (less than 1/4 inch across), rough or scaly spots that may be pink-red or flesh-colored. Usually they develop on the face, ears, backs of the hands, and arms of middle-aged or older people with fair skin, although they can arise on other sun-exposed areas. People with one actinic keratosis usually develop many more. Actinic keratoses tend to grow slowly. They usually do not cause any symptoms.
