Susceptibility pattern of Acinetobacter species

The present study confirms the multi-drug resistant nature of Acinetobacter species, and highlights the correlation between its incidence and duration of hospitalization. Rigorous use of standard precautions and minimizing hospital stay would reduce infection, and consequently, antibiotic overuse, which contributes further to drug resistance. In addition, a robust antibiotic policy and antibiotic stewardship in the hospital can minimize its incidence.

Acinetobacter causes a wide variety of illness in debilitated and hospitalized patients. Carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter is an emerging problem and is a cause of concern as many nosocomial infections with Acinetobacter are resistant to most other antibiotics. The present study was aimed to study metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production in Acinetobacter species. During one year study (Sep.2010 to Aug.2011), all isolates of Acinetobacter obtained from various clinical samples like respiratory, pus, blood and others were included.

Non-fermenting gram negative bacilli (NFGNB) have emerged as a major cause of nosocomial infection. They can be recovered from the hospital environment, commonly cause device related infections, are often resistant to disinfectant. These NFGNB are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics which are used in critically ill patients. Aims: To know the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of NFGNB from various clinical specimens. The main objectives of this study is to know the various NFGNB and the prevalence in hospital.

Otitis Media is inflammation of the middle ear, which often causes hearing loss. It is one of the common ear infections addressed very frequently. Appropriate treatment at right time is necessary to prevent adverse complications. The common bacteria causing Otitis Media are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter species, Enterobacter species, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and common fungi causing otitis media are mainly Candida non albicans and Aspergillus species.

NFGNB also known as Non-fermenters (NFs) are emerging with increasing frequency as agents of opportunistic and often, serious infection as well as nosocomial infection. NFGNB are innately resistant to many antibiotics and are known to produce extended spectrum β-lactamases and metallo β-lactamases (MBL).Very few laboratories in India identify these organisms as routine as they are slow growing and requires special media and biochemical tests for identification. The rates of isolation of NFGNBs are increasing in Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, hence this study was done.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as an extensively-drug-resistant pathogen implicated in healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) such as ventilator associated pneumonia, urinary tract infection, bacteremia, septicemia, secondary meningitis, wound infection etc. In the recent past carbapenems had been drugs of choice for serious infections with Acinetobacter baumannii, but carbapenem resistant strains are rapidly emerging. This study assesses the prevalence and mechanisms of resistance for Meropenem, Imipenem among Acinetobacter species isolated from a tertiary care center.
