Sustainable coastal planning

The aim of this paper was to quantify spatialtemporal dynamics of mangrove forests Quang Yent town, Quang Ninh province from 2017 to 2019 using Sentinel 2A imageries. It then estimated above-ground mangrove biomass and carbon stocks, and their changes. These findings were used to inform coastal management planning and policy development, particularly related to sustainable management of mangrove forests and likelihood improvements in the face of a changing climate in Vietnam.

The research objective was to determine the suitability of land regarding physical and economic conditions as a basis to support managers in planning effective agricultural development strategies that are suitable and sustainable for land potential in a future affected by climate change. In this research, physical and socio-economic data were collected by field surveys, household interviews (330 households), and agricultural manager discussions.

Hai Hau - Nghia Hung are two coastal districts in the Southeast of Nam Dinh province with total area of 35,652.29 km2 . Located in the middle between the Southern provinces of the Red river delta and the North Central provinces, Hai Hau and Nghia Hung are about 100 km from Hanoi along National Route 1A and 80 km from Hai Phong, in an area directly affected by the Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh growth triangle. The two districts have an approximately 47 km coastline accounting for over 65% of the coastline of the province.

This paper presents the study results on nearshore wave propagation and transformation, as well as the distribution of wave set-up during storms in the coastal area of Cua Dai, Hoi An, using SWAN and SWASH models. The models are thoroughly tested against wave and water level data series collected during a campaign in the project framework.

The Level 2 interviews gave some insight into why some countries may have stalled in the progress with adoption of the integrated approach (Box 2.2). A central objective of the integrated approach to water resources management is to ensure increased coordination in development planning between water managers and the various development planners. Coastal Louisiana's built and natural environment faces risks from catastrophic tropical storms. Concurrently, the region is experiencing a dramatic conversion of coastal land and associated habitats to open water and a loss of important services provided by such ecosystems. Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) engaged in a detailed modeling, simulation, and analysis exercise, the results of which informed Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast.

The Mekong River Delta in Vietnam can be considered as a large tropical wetland, in which two typical eco-forest wetlands can be distinguished: the inland Melaleuca forest wetlands and the coastal mangrove forest wetlands. Their main functions are the provision of forest commodities, the regulation of the water balance and biodiversity conservation. However as elsewhere under human pressure their existence is under the threat of forest fires and deforestation. Their protection requires the implementation of a multi-level national or sub-national planning policy.
