Sustainable crop improvement method

Biofortification is an effective and economical method to improve the micronutrient content of crops, particularly staples that sustain human populations in developing countries. Rice (Oryza sativa), one of the most important food crops in the world, feeds more than half of the world‟s population and issued as a staple food in many parts of Asia.

Water stress periods are common in rainfed agriculture therefore the activities aimed at conserving the rainwater should be adopted for improving the productivity of dryland crops. The major crops in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are cotton, soybean and sorghum. It was observed that the drought situation may arise during crop growth period which may result in partial failure of crops. It was therefore felt worthwhile to adopt the proper methods of in-situ moisture conservation so as to partially meet out the adverse effect of water stress in standing crop.

A major focus in the coming decades would be on safe and eco-friendly methods by exploiting the beneficial micro-organisms for sustainable crop production. As mung bean is the major pulse crop in Telangana state, it was taken as a test crop in this study.

Role of vermicompost in nourishing agricultural crops has attracted the attention of researchers throughout the globe in past few decades. Vermicompost is the method of using earthworms to transform organic waste into nutrient rich compost. The earthworms’ casting is nutritive organic manure rich in humus, NPK, micronutrients, beneficial microbes, antibiotics, enzymes, growth hormones, etc. There are many reports in literature showing beneficial effects of imbedding vermicompost in soil.

Major rice-wheat growing soils of Upper Gangetic Plains, India were studied and evaluated by considering soil-site characteristics by using qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method employed were USDA land capability classification and land suitability classification, while the quantitative evaluation method includes Riquier's parametric approach. The land evaluation methods indicated that information on production potential of soils provide a basis for comparison among different soils.

Adoption, Paddy is important cereal crop of Andhra Pradesh state, particularly East and West Godavari is considered as Rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh. It is cultivated under wide range of soils and climatic conditions. It is grown in black soils as well as heavy clay loam soils. In East Godavari district total rice production area is 4.23/ha. The major varieties grown in Ramchandrapuram mandal are MTU-1010, PLU-1100. More than 70% of the Indian farming community own less than one hectare of land. They belong to the category of small and marginal farmers.

This study undertakes an economic analysis of selected sustainable land management (SLM) models in three selected provinces: Hoa Binh province in the Northwestern Mountainous region, Quang Tri province in the North Central Coast and Can Tho province in the Mekong Delta. The SLM models in Hoa Binh province are agroforestry models and those in the provinces of Quang Tri and Can Tho are annual crop rotations and intercropping with improved cultivation methods.
