WADI project, though the name derived from a Gujarati term for orchards, works as a livelihood project for socio-economic development of tribal people throughout India. Being funded by NABARD and in Odisha implemented by ITDA, it is operationalised in most of the tribal dominated districts and is a holistic approach for the sustainable development of tribal livelihood. Ex Post Facto Study conducted in Champua Subdivision of Keonjhar district of Odisha taking the WADI adopting and WADI non-adopting tribal people as respondents shows the differences in development of both the groups.

The study identified a potential rivalrous relationship in terms of space and cultivation mechanism when sustainability is in view. Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) is a State Plan Scheme of Additional Central Assistance launched during August, 2007 as a part of the 11th Five year plan by the Government of India to achieve 4 % annual growth in agriculture through development of agriculture and allied sectors. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Rudrur was allocated fund Rs.22,00,000/- under RKVY during 2014-15 for organising Field Testing and Popularizing Integrated Farming System Approach for the sustainable livelihoods where Vanaraja Birds were distributed to 37 beneficiaries. A study was undertaken under rainfed conditions to develop pond-based IFS models for smallholder farm of 1.6 ha comprising rice-onion cropping system, multilayer pisciculture, poultry and mushroom with conventional rice-green gram cropping system. Field experiments were conducted at five cluster of villages located in five different blocks viz. Khajuripada of Kandhamal district, Dhenkanal Sadar and Odapada of Dhenkanal district, Golamunda and Narla of Kalahandi district of Odisha under rainfed medium land situations during 2010-11 to 2012-13.
