The project of pilot energy crops will open a new direction in environmental rehabilitation and restoration works as well as the environmental and socio-economic benefits as: To improve the soil condition and increase the value of land after mining as well as the regional biodiversity contribution; To salvage the mine-land as the feeding area for local animals in the condition of increased limited cultivation areas, indirectly generate bio-energy through Bio-digester model.

"Research on the potential of some sweet sorghum genotypes as bioethanol source under Mediterranean conditions" was conducted to determine the potential of bioethanol production from different sweet sorghum varieties under the Çukurova conditions with a Mediterranean climate. Experiments were conducted over two years in 2016 and 2017 on the experimental fields of the Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute in Adana province between June and October in randomized blocks design with four replications.

The highest bioethanol production was obtained from juice and bagasse of variety SS-301, by the mixed-culture treatment. From the juice, bioethanol concentration was 50.26 mL L1 , whereas from bagasse, bioethanol concentration was 10.5 mL L1 . Finally, it could be estimated that 160 mL of bioethanol can be produced out of each 1 kg of variety SS-301, when using both juice and bagasse.

The process of crop domestication often consists of two stages: Initial domestication, where the wild species is first cultivated by humans, followed by diversification, when the domesticated species are subsequently adapted to more environments and specialized uses.

An experiment was conducted to exploit heterosis in F1 hybrids of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) and to identify parents with desirable genetic effects with respect to single-cut green fodder yield and its component traits. 48 F1 hybrids were evaluated to assess general and specific combining ability and gene action governing the green fodder yield and its attributing traits.

In this study, two varieties of sweet sorghum (Keller and ETian) were grown with 5 levels (0, 5, 10, 25 and 50 ppm) of cadmium (Cd) in order to investigate the accumulation of Cd in plant parts at the hard dough stage. The results clearly showed the absence of Cd in the seeds of the above plants.

Heterosis or hybrid vigour is the increased or decreased vigour growth, fitness or yield of a hybrid over the parental values, resulting from the crossing of genetically divers genotype. Heterosis has positive association with specific combining ability (sca) variance. For the development of effective heterosis breeding programme in sweet sorghum, one needs to have information about genetic architecture and estimated prepotency of parents in hybrid combinations.

Sweet sorghum is an important fodder crop, besides which can be used for the multiple purposes like grain, jaggery making and ethanol production. Leaf blight caused by the Exserohilum turcicum is an important disease affecting the sorghum. Studies on epidemiology of the disease were conducted at Main Agricultural Research station, UAS, Dharwad during kharif 2017.

Sweet sorghum is a new generation bio-energy crop with considerable tolerance to drought and salinity and amenable for multiple uses. Sweet sorghum has elicited the interest of breeder due to its capacity to provide renewable energy products, industrial commodities, food and animal feed. The sweet sorghum donor RSSV 313 is developed through a cross NSS223 x NARI 111 at MPKV, Rahuri through pedigree selection as identified and recommended as a donor parent in crop improvement programme based on specific physiological traits viz.

Ablo is a wet bread, slightly salty and sweet, steamed and sold in the form of pellets. The study is intended to develop the production’s technology of two new types of Ablo. The methodology adopted consists of carrying out production tests according to the original process described by Aholou-yeyi (2007) modified. The results showed that production of sorghum-based Ablo technology and production of millet-based Ablo technology followed four main steps, namely: the preparation of flour, the preparation of the dough to ferment, fermentation and cooking.

When comparing the heavy metals accumulation in the two cultivars, the results showed that the BT cultivar had higher Cd uptake and accumulation potential than ET. Therefore, BT can be used for phytoremediation of heavy metals in soil but not for providing food and feed.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) cultivars store non-structural carbohydrates predominantly as either starch in seeds (grain sorghums) or sugars in stems (sweet sorghums). Previous research determined that sucrose accumulation in sweet sorghum stems was not correlated with the activities of enzymes functioning in sucrose metabolism, and that an apoplasmic transport step may be involved in stem sucrose accumulation.

Sweet sorghum is a rich source of starch content and can be diverted for beer production using efficient yeast strains and adopting few fermentation parameters. Five standard yeast strains were screened for their efficiency for beer production. The effect of inoculum level of yeast and fermentation period on pH, tannin content, alcohol content and residual reducing sugars were determined. Different yeast inoculum level (1%, 1.5% and 2%) were used for fermentation of wort and it was found that the alcohol content was maximum at 2 per cent inoculum level (3.

Sweet sorghum grains have high starch content which can be converted to sugars by malting and mashing processes. Three sweet sorghum cultivars „SSV-74‟, „SSV-84‟ and „SSV-108‟ and a sorghum cultivar „SSV-2‟ were screened for their amylase activity and reducing sugars. Grains were soaked at three different time intervals of 8h, 12h and 16h and germinated subsequently for 2 and 3 days. The highest amylase activity (1266.10 g of protein/15 min/g of sample) was recorded in sweet sorghum cultivar „SSV-84‟ soaked for a time interval of 16h and germinated for 3 days.

To provide an alternative sweet snack for the benefit of diabetic subjects, functional low glycemic index red sorghum flakes based snack bar was developed. Red sorghum [Atharga kempu jola (AKJ-1)] was procured from All India Co-ordinated Sorghum Improvement Project, Reglycemic indexonal Agricultural Research Station, Vijayapur and other ingredients were procured from local market. Storage quality of designed snack bar was assessed by accelerated shelf life method. Sorghum flakes based low glycemic index snack bars weighing 100 g was used for LD polyethylene packaging material and storage.
