  • This article is an attempt to identify and analyze the processes used in teacher-student conversations (TSCs) in the memoir Teacher Man by Frank McCourt in terms of semantic and syntactic aspects. These findings can make students majoring in English understand more clearly about processes often employed in TSCs.

  • Appraisal Theory, which has been developed by linguists Martin & White since the 1990s, is the development of functional grammar in terms of interpersonal meaning. Based on the Appraisal Theory, this article aims to investigate the three sub-categories namely “Affect”, “Judgement” and “Appreciation” in English Speeches by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates (ESNPLs) with focus placed on identifying and describing syntactic realizations and semantic features of the three above-mentioned sub-categories in 25 ESNPLs collected from the official website of the Nobel Prize in the period 2000-2019.

  • In the linguistic treasure of any nation, similes represent a minor-yet-significant part in expressing physical and spiritual aspects of that nation. To learners of foreign languages, the application of similes in communication, to some extent, demonstrates their proficiency in using the language.

  • Workflow management systems help to execute, monitor and manage work process flow and execution. These systems, as they are executing, keep a record of who does what and when (e.g. log of events). The activity of using computer software to examine these records, and deriving various structural data results is called workflow mining.

  • ESL student writing development has been a concern in second language research. However, most of the current studies focus on the development in the language teaching context. The context of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has been under-represented, in which how EMI students’ writing changes over time without teaching or explicit feedback on language has not been well-researched. This paper aimed at tracing the development of students writing in an EMI program in Vietnam. Particularly, the paper analyzed one particular aspect of syntactic complexity (i.e.

  • transformational gr, m m a r on the S-structure level. (See appendix for some examplesD Structures of that type seem to us very suited for further semantic interpretation, since they offer a level of syntactic structure which both expresses ~'~mmatical functions (which are defined ~onfigurationally) and constituent structure features which axe important for certain aspects of logical form as e.g.quantifier scoping.

  • We present a knowledge and context-based system for parsing and translating natural language and evaluate it on sentences from the Wall Street Journal. Applying machine learning techniques, the system uses parse action examples acquired under supervision to generate a deterministic shift-reduce parser in the form of a decision structure. It relies heavily on context, as encoded in features which describe the morphological, syntactic, semantic and other aspects of a given parse state.

  • In this paper, we present a computational method for transforming a s y n t a c t i c g r a p h , which represents all syntactic interpretations of a sentence, into a s e m a n t i c g r a p h which filters out certain interpretations, but also incorporates any remaining ambiguities. We argue that the resulting ambiguous graph, supported by an exclusion matrix, is a useful data structure for question answering and other semantic processing. Our research is based on the principle that ambiguity is an inherent aspect of natural...

  • While various aspects of syntactic structure have been shown to bear on the determination of phraselevel prosody, the text-to-speech field has lacked a robust working system to test the possible relations between syntax and prosody. We describe an implemented system which uses the deterministic parser Fidditch to create the input for a set of prosody rules.

  • A dictionary is an extremely valuable reference book, but its familiarity tends to blind adults to the high level of intelligence required to read it. This aspect becomes apparent, however, when school children are observed learning dictionary skills. Children do not respect syntactic category and often wander into the wrong lexieai entry, apparently in search of something they can understand. They also find it difficult to match the sense of a polysemous word to the context of a particular passage.

  • The paper discusses the linguistic aspects of a new general purpose facility for computing with features. The program was developed in connection with the course I taught at the University of Texas in the fall of 1983. It is a generalized and expanded version of a system that Stuart Shieber originally designed for the PATR-II project at SRI in the spring of 1983 with later modifications by Fernando Pereira and me.

  • We describe a generative probabilistic model of natural language, which we call HBG, that takes advantage of detailed linguistic information to resolve ambiguity. HBG incorporates lexical, syntactic, semantic, and structural information from the parse tree into the disambiguation process in a novel way. We use a corpus of bracketed sentences, called a Treebank, in combination with decision tree building to tease out the relevant aspects of a parse tree that will determine the correct parse of a sentence.

  • Prosody can be useful in resolving certain lexical and structural ambiguities in spoken English. In this paper we present some results of employing two types of prosodic information, namely pitch and pause, to assist syntactic and semantic analysis during parsing. morphosyntactic interpretations to one correct analysis without error (p. 262). (Steedman 1990) explores taking advantage of intonational structure in spoken sentence understanding in the combinatory categorial grammar formalism.

  • Phrase-structure grammars are an effective representation for important syntactic and semantic aspects of natural languages, but are computationally too demanding for use as language models in real-time speech recognition. An algorithm is described that computes finite-state approximations for context-free grammars and equivalent augmented phrase-structure grammar formalisms. The approximation is exact for certain contextfree grammars generating regular languages, including all left-linear and right-linear context-free grammars. ...

  • Fourteen indicators that measure the frequency of lexico-syntactic phenomena linguistically related to aspectual class are applied to aspectual classification. This group of indicators is shown to improve classification performance for two aspectual distinctions, stativity and completedness (i.e., telicity), over unrestricted sets of verbs from two corpora. Several of these indicators have not previously been discovered to correlate with aspect.

  • We describe novel aspects of a new natural language generator called Nitrogen. This generator has a highly flexible input representation that allows a spectrum of input from syntactic to semantic depth, and shifts' the burden of many linguistic decisions to the statistical post-processor. The generation algorithm is compositional, making it efficient, yet it also handles non-compositional aspects of language. Nitrogen's design makes it robust and scalable, operating with lexicons and knowledge bases of one hundred thousand entities. ...
