Đuôi kiếm sống ở vùng nước biển nông, độ sâu phổ biến là 4 – 10m, đôi khi chúng phân bố sâu vào vùng cửa sông. Thức ăn của chúng là trai, ốc, giun đốt, động vật không xương sống khác sống ở đáy và tảo.
