Target organ damage
-
Older adults with hypertension face an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, emphasizing the importance of target organ damage (TOD) in their treatment. The nondipping blood pressure (BP) pattern, characterized by inadequate reduction of nocturnal BP (less than 10-20%), is associated with a higher likelihood of TOD in individuals with essential hypertension. This study aimed to examine the characteristics of non-dipping BP patterns among elderly individuals with essential hypertension and evaluate their associations with TOD.

Oliguria is associated with a decreased kidney- and organ perfusion, leading to organ damage and increased mortality. While the effects of correcting oliguria on renal outcome have been investigated frequently, whether urine output is a modifiable risk factor for mortality or simply an epiphenomenon remains unclear.

Hormones are chemical communication signaling molecules released into the body fluids to stimulate target cells of multicellular organisms. We recently showed that histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) plays an important role in juvenile hormone (JH) suppression of metamorphosis in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum.

HGF/MET pathway may have a role in pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, the link between the pathway and development of target organ damage in PH remains elusive. We aimed to demonstrate the relation between plasma HGF and HGF/MET tissue expressions in affected organs during PH progression.

Defining Critical Infrastructure: Nearly every organization is susceptible to a cyber attack. However, it is cost prohibitive to protect everything, and not every asset, even those within critical infrastructures, will have an impact on national security or critical functions. The government should work closely with each sector to identify elements of critical infrastructure that, if damaged or destroyed, could cause great loss of life or significant economic damage impacting our national security.

The threat is real and immediate. Essentially, every week there are news reports of some company or organization that has had data stolen – from the Department of Defense to, increasingly, small businesses. Most incidents, of course, are never made public. The potential damage, as we will discuss, involves far more than stolen or damaged data. Cyber is connected to our economy and job creation. It is not just national security information that is being stolen from databases in the U.S. All kinds of intellectual property are targeted. Information stolen from...

One of the most popular organic pesticides, neem, is toxic to non-target species including crustaceans and tadpoles. Neem has been shown to cause the brain disease toxic encephalopathy in children. In mice, it causes chromosomal abnormalities in bone marrow cells and damages the DNA of sperm . Are there any other problems with organic pesticides? We really do not know simply because they are not regulated like the “synthetic” ones. Many organic products have never been tested for safety, but they are used under the guise that they are “natural” and are therefore not “chemicals”....

Despite the prominence of gender issues in the IADGs, effectiveness of development cooperation has not focussed enough on outcomes of gender equality and women’s rights in terms of either the inclusion of indicators tracking the focus of development cooperation on gender equality or the participation of women’s organisations in initiatives to hold actors to account. 2012 analysis conducted for the DCF shows that aid/partnership policies, targets and mutual accountability processes do not focus adequately on the gender impact of development cooperation.

Protein phosphorylation is a reversible posttranslational modification catalyzed by protein kinases and reversely by protein phosphatases. There are about 500 protein kinases and 25-30 phosphatases in human genome. Each kinase and phosphatase targets multiple substrates. Thus, protein phosphorylation is a most versatile signaling regulatory mechanism and constitutes a most complicated signaling network in living organisms. In fact, protein phosphorylation governs all aspects of physiological and pathological processes in human health....
