Tasseling stage

Heat tolerance is becoming increasingly important where maize is grown under spring season in India which coincide with grain filling stage of crop resulting in tassel blast, reduced pollen viability, pollination failure and barren ears that causes devastating yield losses.

An experiment was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana to find out the appropriate planting method and optimum nitrogen level for enhancing the seed yield of fodder maize (Zea mays L.) variety J-1006. The experiment was conducted in strip plot design with three sowing methods viz. zero tillage (ZT), conventional tillage (CT) and bed planting (BP) in vertical strips and four nitrogen levels (0, 100, 125 and 150 kg N/ha) in horizontal strips.

Field experiment was conducted in black soils in order to study the soil enzyme activities viz., Dehydrogenase, Urease and Phosphatases for maize using Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria (ZSB) in combination with graded levels of ZnSO4. Treatment consisted of two factors viz., Microbial inoculation (M1 : control, M2 : AM fungi, M3 : ZSB and M4 : M2 + M3 ) and graded levels of ZnSO4 (S1 : 0, S2 : 12.5, S3 : 25, S4 : 37.5, S5 : 50 kg ha-1 and S6 : 0.5 % foliar spray @ 45 and 65 DAS) replicated three times in FRBD.

The field experiment was conducted with maize during kharif on a sandy loam soil at College Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with 13 treatments, each replicated thrice. The urease and dehydrogenase activites in soil were assayed and the results showed an increasing trend in enzymatic activities with the age of the crop and exhibited highest activity at tasseling stage and thereafter the activity decreased towards maturity and harvest.

Genetic gain in Testcrosses derived from heat tolerant multi-parental synthetic populations of maize
Heat stress due to prolonged high ambient temperature during critical growth stages is a serious threat to crop production worldwide. Though being a C4 crop, maize has relatively wider adaptation, however, weather extremes such as heat stress is challenging its threshold limits. There is an absolute requirement of heat tolerant cultivars in the present condition as climate change has a become reality.

Maize is highly productive crop if it is grown under optimal environmental and management conditions. Waterlogging, caused by contingent flooding, continuous rainfall and inadequate drainage or a high water table, is one of the most important constraints for maize production in Asia and many other parts of the world.

In the present study, chlorophyll ‘a’, chlorophyll ‘b’ and total chlorophyll was found to be influenced by the application of essential nutrients particularly, N, S and Fe. Lower chlorophyll concentration was found in early immature and later at senescence leaves. Total chlorophyll in canopy increased during the vegetative growth period, reaching a maximum close to tasseling stage and then decreased during reproductive and senescence period. Among the various treatments (F5) i.e.
