  • Phytoplankton species composition, abundance, biodiversity indices and their influence by environmental conditions were examined in Thi Nai lagoon using data from four surveys in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2020. A total of 367 taxa of phytoplankton belonging to ten groups was recorded, of which diatoms were dominant with over 60% of the total species.

  • The inner integument is recorded two types. The data proved useful in the construction of a bracketed key to the species. The potential taxonomic value of the recorded characters is indicated by the richness of variation recorded in the limited sample of genera and species.

  • The aim of this study was to demonstrate and evaluate the diatom communities in the copper infected areas readily associated with the Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) at the bank of the Subarnarekha River. This study was based on three sampling sites commonly designated as high copper (>100 μg.L-1 ), medium copper (≤100 μg.L-1 ) and low copper (≤50 μg.L-1 ) contaminated area. Results indicated the detailed taxonomic description of 31 species that are dominant or less dominant over these contaminated area. Among the identified taxa, 10 were recorded as new to the Jharkhand state.

  • An analysis of the taxonomic diversity of benthic diatoms was carried out for near-shore biotopes of Crimea with different content of trace metals and organic pollutants (PCBs, PAHs, DDTs). Taxonomic distinctness indices such as average taxonomic distinctness, AvTD (Δ+) and variation in taxonomic distinctness, VarTD (Λ+) were used for evaluation of the hierarchical structure of diatom taxocenes of two intact sites (Dvuyakornaya Bay and Cape Fiolent) and two heavily polluted water areas (Sevastopol Bay and Balaklava Bay).

  • Fruit flies under Tephritidae are one of the diverse and agriculturally important insects. It needs reliable taxonomic procedures to resolve species complexes and genetic structure analysis to effectively control this pest. Little attention has been given to the analysis of genetic diversity in South Indian populations. By using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and II (cox1 and cox2), the genetic analysis of B. dorsalis from eight locations of major fruit growing areas in western parts of Tamil Nadu were investigated.

  • Marssonina leaf blotch caused by the fungus Marssonina coronaria (Ellis & J.J. Davis) J.J. Davis causing premature leaf fall is one of the major economic constraint which hampers apple production in India. Seven isolates of Marssonina coronaria were isolated and evaluated for their morphological and molecular characterization using ITS primers. All the seven isolates were identified based on the morphological characteristics, and produced brown to black colonies without aerial mycelium, formed a wrinkled surface, on PDA after incubation for 30 days.

  • This paper introduced the testing results of three methods (analysis of morphological characteristics using numerical phenetics, the whole-cell proteins using SDS-PAGE and the DNA barcode sequences) used for determination of the genetic diversity of some earthworm species belonging to the Pheretima species group in the Mekong Delta (Amynthas paraalexandri, A. juliani, Metaphire posthuma, M. bahli, M. peguana, M. houlleti, Metaphire sp.8, Polypheretima elongata and P. taprobanae).

  • In the rainy and dry seasons the algal taxonomic compositions were very different, with prevailing diatoms in the winter and cyabobacteria and greens in summer. Bio-indication shows that the taxonomic preference for the self-purification process was more intensive during the rainy season, while the low level of river water in the dry season stressed the algal community.

  • Benthic algae have been intensively studied, especially over the past two decades. This intensity has been stimulated by the widespread recognition that benthic algae are ideal indicators of the health of many, if not most, aquatic ecosystems. With this book we hope to synthesize this vital area of research and share its essence with our colleagues and students. We started with an outline of the myriad abiotic and biotic determinants of benthic algal ecology.

  • Active renewal policies that required families to submit documentation to verify their continued eligibility were associated with substantial disenrollment. Requiring active eligibility redetermination every 6 months rather than every 12 months resulted in even higher levels of disenrollment over time. Up to one- quarter of children who disenrolled at renewal returned to SCHIP within 3 months (18 percent to 27 percent).
