Teacher education embraces

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is regarded as one of the formulas to embracing many of our imminent challenges. STEM education benefits the learners by encouraging interest in STEM disciplines. This daunting task needs everyone’s concerted efforts in creating and innovating mathematics teachers’ classroom practices.

This study aimed to determine if preservice secondary teachers also exhibited attributes of secondary subcultures. Through the Teacher Multicultural Attitude Survey and the Culturally Responsive Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale, this study revealed that subcultures also occur within preservice teachers, specifically preservice mathematics teachers and preservice English teachers, with regards to multicultural awareness and attitudes.

The aim of teacher education is to produce quality teachers who can facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes by the learners. The teacher is an essential facilitator in the implementation process of the curriculum. In education, therefore; the importance of the teacher takes second place only after that of the learners so that the quality of the teacher is of great concern to the education system.

In 1995, one fifth of Mexico’s population could not afford the minimum daily nutritional requirements. Some 10 million people lacked even the most basic health care, and more than 1.5 million children were out of school. In 1997, the education, health and nutrition programme, Progresa, initiated conditional cash transfers for poor families. They received monthly stipends if their children attended school and family members visited health clinics regularly for nutrition and hygiene education and check-ups. Rigorous evaluations deemed the programme an overwhelming success.
