Temperature tolerant genotypes

High temperature is a major environmental stress factor limiting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) productivity. Improvement of heat tolerance in wheat is an important breeding objective. The present investigation was carried out to evaluate and identify terminal heat tolerant bread wheat genotypes on the basis heat susceptibility index.

In the present scenario of climate change, temperature rise leads to reduction in the yield of millets whereas irregular rainfall adds to this reduction with a negative impact. QTL mapping for different drought tolerance genes in millets will be helpful for breeding climate resilient genotypes. Similarly QTLs for significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for several yield related traits under stress will also proved to be beneficial for breeding for climate resilience.

A field experiment was conducted in Rabi 2015 in a randomized block design with the objective to screen advanced breeding lines (genotypes) of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern and Coss) for different physiological parameters viz, chlorophyll content, membrane stability index (MSI %), relative water content (RWC %) and electrolyte leakage and yield related to terminal heat tolerance. The study indicated that genotypes, ‘Pusa Bold’, ‘NRCHB-101’ and ‘PRO-5222’ had tolerance to high temperature at terminal stage.

Temperature of environment increase day by day so present time identification of heat tolerant genotypes is great challenge. Because tolerance to high temperature is a multi-genic character and also many screenable traits are available. But there no single techniques available which give holistic idea about plant level heat tolerance. Gametophytic selection could be one of the alternative strategies. There are many successful attempt have been made to improve the crop plants by gametophytic selection.

Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen with the ability to survive and grow in different foods and food processing environments. The variability in innate stress tolerance abilities of L. monocytogenes strains (n=104) isolated from clinical (n=35), environment (n=28) and food (n=41) sources was investigated against salt (2.5% to 12.5%), pH (pH 4.0 to 9.5) and low temperature (down to 4⁰C). The stress tolerance abilities were correlated with the source of isolation, serogroups and identifying the prevalent stress tolerant genotype.

To study the effect of different temperature and photoperiod regimes on tocopherol content, seventeen photo and thermo tolerant soybean genotypes were planted under three planting dates viz., March 1(D1), June 5 (D2) and August 7 (D3). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for genotypes, environments and genotype x environment interaction for tocopherol content.

The investigation was conducted on three mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] genotypes namely MH-421, MH-318 and Basanti genotypes to study their biochemical, and yield response in relation to terminal heat stress tolerance. The plants were raised in earthen pots (30 cm diameter) filled with 5.5 kg of dune sand (Typic Torrispamments) under screen house conditions. High temperature stress was given by manipulation of sowing dates i.e. normal sown (12th March, 2013) and late sown (29th March, 2013).

Drought is the major abiotic stress that results in severe loss of yield to crops. It is estimated that there will be a steep rise in global water consumption in the coming years. On the other hand, it is also estimated that the sources of water will deplete due to rise in temperature and climate change. It is, therefore, critical to find out such genotypes of crops that have the ability to tolerate drought without much loss of yield.

Heat tolerant and susceptible genotypes of potato were grown in a non potato growing tropical region i.e. West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh during rabi 2016-17 in order to find out the morphological traits that contribute to heat tolerance. Data on different yield and yield attributing characters were analysed (correlation and path analysis) to find out the direct and indirect contribution of important traits towards adaptation of potato to high temperatures.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a staple food crop is of great commercial importance. Its production is restricted due to various abiotic stresses. There are indications that the wheat production is consistently limited by terminal heat stress. Here, performance of forty genotypes of wheat was undertaken for assessment of direct selection parameters (variability, heritability and genetic advance) and their relation with heat tolerance.

In bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.), development of thermal stress tolerant cultivars and realization of potential at yield in hot climate is enshrined goal of our breeding program. By keeping the above fact in view, the present study was conducted in two environments i.e. normal and late sown condition with 10 diverse genotypes, their 45 F1’s and F2’s to magnify the yield level of wheat in high temperature areas by selecting stress tolerant parents and cross combinations.

Climate change has emerged as a biggest environmental challenge for agricultural production worldwide. In this respect, thermo-tolerance is a major objective in many crop sp. including Brassicas. Due to fluctuation in weather parameters, there is needed to develop temperature tolerant Indian mustard varieties for early sown condition. Keeping the facts in view, the present experiment was made to assess the genetic divergence among thirty-five genotypes from different AICRP-RM research centres under early sown condition. Based on D2 analysis, 35 genotypes were grouped into seven clusters.

Rice is one of the most important staple foods among the cereal crops for half of the human population. Unlike other cereals such as wheat and barley, rice plants are susceptible to cold stress, which causes decrease in productivity, especially in regions where the indica subspecies is cultivated.
