Foot Infection is a chief complication of diabetes mellitus leading to complications like gangrene and limb amputation and constitutes common diabetes-related cause of hospitalization. This study was undertaken to characterize the aerobic bacterial isolates from diabetic foot infections and analyze their antibiotic resistance pattern in a tertiary care hospital of north Kerala.

Candidosis or Candidiasis caused by various species of Candida is the commonest fungal disease found in human beings and is among the four most common causes of nosocomial infections. Antifungal resistance poses a major public health concern. Lack of routine diagnostic testing for fungal diseases exacerbates the problem of antifungal drug empiricism. Aim: To study the Proportion, Speciation and Antifungal Resistance Pattern of the Candida Isolates in a tertiary care hospital of North Kerala. Materials and Methods...

Enterococci have emerged as an increasingly important cause of nosocomial infections in patients with cancer. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) is a cause of concern, as once established, it is very difficult to control. A study on the characterization and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of clinical isolates of enterococci from patients with cancer was carried out in the Division of Microbiology, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram for a period of three months.

Urinary tract infections are one of the most common causes of patient attendance in hospitals. E.coli remains the most commonly isolated pathogen causing Urinary tract infections. Antibiotic resistance is an emerging problem in developing countries. The way ahead is to streamline the utilisation of antibiotics and to implement locally relevant antibiotic policy. A total of 1152 urine samples were received during the study period. 327 samples grew monobacterial significant bacteriuria. Semi-quantitative cultures were performed.

The study showed an increased prevalence of MRSA among the inpatients when compared to the outpatients. A single intervention will unlikely to have a significant impact on attenuating MRSA infection rates. Multifactorial bundled approach is the need of the hour in containing the MRSA infections along with robust antimicrobial stewardship and prompt infection control measures and judicious use of the drugs of choice for MRSA infection which have to be preserved for the future use.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia causes opportunistic infections and is an emerging opportunistic pathogen. The rate of infections due to these bacteria has increased in recent years and so is their resistance to antimicrobials. Thus, the present study was conducted with an objective to identify Stenotrophomonas isolation from various clinical samples and to study its antimicrobial sensitivity/ resistance pattern which will guide clinicians in prophylactic antibiotic therapy.
