Microbial keratitis is a sight threatening infection of the cornea and is a major cause of blindness in India. Though several risk factors such as corneal trauma, blepharitis, herpetic keratitis, xerophthalmia, keratopathies, and eyelid abnormalities, are cited, its incidence has been increased in the past few years, and the wear of contact lens emerging as one of the major risk factors.

Keratitis is the inflammation of the cornea. Fungi are the most common etiological agents which account for 30–40% of the cases whereas bacteria account for 13–48% of all cases of suppurative keratitis; this varies by geographical area1 . Fungal keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea caused by fungi. It is worldwide in distribution, but is more common in the tropics and subtropical regions. Fungal keratitis is an important cause of ocular morbidity and blindness worldwide and is a growing threat that has substantial morbidity and cost.

The eye may be infected from external sources or through intraocular invasion of microorganisms carried by the blood stream. The common eye infections caused by bacterial and fungal pathogens are blepharitis, conjunctivitis, internal and external hordeolum, keratitis, dacryocystitis. Timely institution of appropriate therapy must be initiated to control the infections and thereby minimize the ocular morbidity.

Inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva is known as conjunctivitis. Bacterial infections account for up to 50-70% of all conjunctivitis cases. Bacterial conjunctivitis is common and affects all age groups. Clinical evaluation and microbiological analysis is valuable for specific treatment. This study was undertaken to elicit bacterial profile and their antibiotic susceptibility of conjunctivitis. This study was carried out in the departments of Ophthalmology and Microbiology of Mediciti Institute of Medical Sciences, Ghanpur, Hyderabad for period of 3 months.
