Textbook evaluation

This research aims to evaluate an ESP textbook entitled Aviation English for ICAO Compliance published by Macmillan 2008. It is designed based on the ESP approach for ATC students who will become air traffic controllers in the future. The textbook takes learners to level 4 of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), which is approximately A2-B1 level and minimum language standard for all pilots and air traffic controllers from March 2008.

The purpose of the study was to examine and evaluate the impact the “flipped classroom” model-based learning environment accompanied by multimedia-based textbook entitled “Ukrainian language (for professional purposes)” provides for the language proficiency and learning styles of the university students majoring in language and literature teaching. A multimedia textbook “Ukrainian for Special Purposes” was designed for the study.

The results indicate that the textbook is essentially relevant to the training objectives and the university’s teaching-learning context. Additionally, based on the results of the evaluation, implications for better use of the textbook are proposed, which could improve the quality of English learning and teaching in the EFL context, and achieve the learning outcome according to the six-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam.

The article "An evaluation of the textbook “New English File” under teachers’and students’ perspectives at Thanh Do University" aimed to identify the strengths and weakness of the course book New English File by Clive Oxenden, Christina Latham-Koenig, and Paul Seligson published by Oxford University Press after its two-year use for non-major post- graduate students at Thanh Do University. Data were collected from the questionnaire responses from three teachers and sixteen students, and the semi-structure interview results of the teachers.

The results indicate students’ satisfaction on educational service in Faculty of Foreign Languages is at an acceptable level generally. This paper indicates four factors have pleased students in the program, including Curriculum, Lecturers’ profession, Class Facilities and Course Exam and Evaluation. Meanwhile, other factors of Library, Textbook, Training information and Management staff do not meet students’ expectation. This result shows new requirements of students in new joint education program training in Vietnam.

The notion of genre has been the topic of discussion by school curriculum designers and textbook writers. This study involved 42 students in answering a questionnaire and 5 teachers in responding the interview questions. With the employment of mixed methods approach, the findings indicated that participants believed that the new English textbook grade 10 could improve their communicative skills. Specifically, the activities designed in the textbook reinforced the communicative skills among students. Furthermore, language provided in the textbook is appropriate and conducive for students, and the topics and contents could help to improve students’ communicative skills.

The research reveals a quantifiable evaluation of the lexical resources, tapping into the mutual and exclusive words, as well as examining lexical complexity of the two sets of textbooks. Unlike conventional textbook reviews focusing on grammar, this study is one of the first attempts to evaluate textbooks efficiency from corpus linguistics perspective, which in turn contributes to the improvement of the current English textbooks in Viet Nam, as well as a source of consideration for curriculum design worldwide.

This paper presents the results of a survey on the use of cultural elements in the NorthStar textbook series to enhance intercultural competencies among students (from freshman to junior year) majoring in English. The findings reveal that most students are aware of the importance of developing their intercultural competence. Efforts have been made by both teachers and students to incorporate the development of intercultural competence for students by using available cultural elements in the NorthStar textbooks.
