  • This research aims to evaluate an ESP textbook entitled Aviation English for ICAO Compliance published by Macmillan 2008. It is designed based on the ESP approach for ATC students who will become air traffic controllers in the future. The textbook takes learners to level 4 of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), which is approximately A2-B1 level and minimum language standard for all pilots and air traffic controllers from March 2008.

  • The results indicate students’ satisfaction on educational service in Faculty of Foreign Languages is at an acceptable level generally. This paper indicates four factors have pleased students in the program, including Curriculum, Lecturers’ profession, Class Facilities and Course Exam and Evaluation.   • This study involved 42 students in answering a questionnaire and 5 teachers in responding the interview questions. With the employment of mixed methods approach, the findings indicated that participants believed that the new English textbook grade 10 could improve their communicative skills. Specifically, the activities designed in the textbook reinforced the communicative skills among students. Furthermore, language provided in the textbook is appropriate and conducive for students, and the topics and contents could help to improve students’ communicative skills.

Unlike conventional textbook reviews focusing on grammar, this study is one of the first attempts to evaluate textbooks efficiency from corpus linguistics perspective, which in turn contributes to the improvement of the current English textbooks in Viet Nam, as well as a source of consideration for curriculum design worldwide.

  • This paper presents the results of a survey on the use of cultural elements in the NorthStar textbook series to enhance intercultural competencies among students (from freshman to junior year) majoring in English. The findings reveal that most students are aware of the importance of developing their intercultural competence. Efforts have been made by both teachers and students to incorporate the development of intercultural competence for students by using available cultural elements in the NorthStar textbooks.
