  • The appraisal of thermo-adaptability among two calf breeds in the controlled environment was the objective of this study. The first group was Tharparkar and second one was crossbred (Hariana; 25 and 50% and Exotic; 50 and 75%) calves. The investigative period consists of 7 days acclimatization period, and 21 days of thermal exposure at control (25°C), moderate (31°C) and severe (37°C) heat stress (6 hrs. per day).

  • The study aimed to evaluate oxidative stress status in cattle breeds of different thermotolerance during different seasons. Ten each of Tharparkar (Bos indicus) and Karan Fries (Bos indicus x Bos taurus) heifers were selected from NDRI herd, Karnal. Animals were maintained under standard managemental practices followed at the farm. Blood samples were aseptically collected from each animal during winter, spring and summer.

  • The physiological responses, dry matter and water intake of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (Holstein-Friesian X Tharparkar) heifers were monitored under two feeding regimes i.e. feeding regime-1 (NRC, 2001) and feeding regime-2 (15 % higher energy than NRC 2001, by supplementation of molasses). Six each of healthy heifers of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (18-24 month) were selected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (ICAR-NDRI), Karnal. Before start of actual experiment, the animals were given 15 days adaptation period on both the feeding regime.

  • Present study was conducted on 50 bulls and 40 male calves of Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Karan Fries cattle maintained at Artificial Breeding Research Center and Livestock Research Center, NDRI Karnal (Haryana) to identify genetic polymorphisms in TNP2 gene.

  • Milk has been regarded as wholesome food since centuries. The major milk proteins are the casein (80%) and the whey proteins (10%). One of the prominent milk proteins in cattle i.e. beta casein, is encoded by highly polymorphic genes, leading to formation of 12 protein variants. Among them A1 and A2 variant are the most frequent; the A2 being the primitive type present in Bos indicus at higher percentage than Bos taurus.

  • First lactation records (91) of Tharparkar cows, progeny of 10 sires, were analyzed to estimate the variance components and breeding values of sires for first lactation milk yield using simple daughter’s average method ( ), Contemporary comparison method (CC), least-squares method (LSM) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). Using , CC, LSM and BLUP methods of sire evaluation the average breeding value of sires were 1849.10 kg, 1836.17 kg, 1858.65kg and 1859.03 kg respectively.

  • The present study was conducted on 91 Tharparkar cows maintained at the Livestock Research Station, Beechwal, Bikaner for 11 years i.e. from 2006 to 2016. The data were analysed with the objective of performance appraisal of Tharparkar cattle with respect to production traits and to study the effect of genetic factor i.e. sire group and non genetic factors i.e. period and season of calving on production traits.
