The counting class
-
This book aims to describe such recent achievements of complexity theory in the context of the classical results. It is intended to be a text and as well as a reference for self-study. This means it must simultaneously cater to many audiences, and it is carefully designed with that goal. Throughout the book we explain the context in which a certain notion is useful, and why things are defined in a certain way. Examples and solved exercises accompany key definitions.

We prove that in the pure mapping class group of the 3-punctured projective plane equipped with the word metric induced by certain generating set, the ratio of the number of pseudo-Anosov elements to the number of all elements in a ball centered at the identity tends to one, as the radius of the ball tends to infinity.

During the centuries which had elapsed since the entry of the Spaniards and Portuguese into these regions an extraordinary fusion of races had taken place. White, red, and black had mingled to such an extent that the bulk of the settled population became half-caste. Only in the more temperate regions of the far north and south, where the aborigines were comparatively few or had disappeared altogether, did the whites remain racially distinct. Socially the Indian and the negro counted for little.

We study the formal and linguistic properties of a class of parenthesis-free categorial grammars derived from those of Ades and Steedman by varying the set of reduction rules. We characterize the reduction rules capable of generating context-sensitive languages as those having a partial combination rule and a combination rule in the reverse direction. We show that any categorial language is a permutation of some context-free language, thus inheriting properties dependent on symbol counting only. We compare some of their properties with other contemporary formalisms. ...

the lexical features of a language. The work is based upon the hypothesis that whenever two words are semantically dissimilar, this difference will manifest itself in the syntax via lexical distribution (in a sense, playing out the notion of distributional analysis [Harris 51]). Most, if not all, features have a semantic basis. For instance, there is a clear semantic difference between most count and mass nouns. But while meaning specifies the core of a word class, it does not specify precisely what can and cannot be a member of a class. For instance, furniture is a mass noun in...

This paper describes automatic techniques for mapping 9611 entries in a database of English verbs to WordNet senses. The verbs were initially grouped into 491 classes based on syntactic features. Mapping these verbs into WordNet senses provides a resource that supports disambiguation in multilingual applications such as machine translation and cross-language information retrieval.

One factor that discourages the use of new organizational techniques is the dependence of email clients, legacy file systems, and other applications on their own independent hierarchical structures. We agree with Boardman [Boardman02] that folder structures should be integrated – in our case, also integrated with our more flexible collection structure. Reporting tools with appropriate visualization are another class of very useful apps. A simple query based tool can be remarkably insightful and useful from “how I spend my time” to “count and space used” by different items.

There are essays assigned in English and composition classes, history and civics classes, and language classes. Many electives even require essays. If you’re a junior or senior, you know that the stakes for essay writing keep getting higher. You’ll probably have to write one in class as part of an exam, and/or have a large part of your grade based on an essay.

Directories. It should be a matter of course for sales-teams to screen hardcopy, CD-ROM or on-line directories for companies which fit the class of industry to which they sell. The source can vary from the maps and lists sold by Market Location, to Kompass, the Commercial Classified directories and the appropriate trade journals. A straight count of the companies within a region may be a guide to the potential for a product.
