The death of dominance

NF-κB is widely involved in lymphoid malignancies; however, the functional roles and specific transcriptomes of NF-κB dimers with distinct subunit compositions have been unclear. Using combined ChIP-sequencing and microarray analyses, we determined the cistromes and target gene signatures of canonical and non-canonical NF-κB species in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) cells.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary renal disorder and the fourth cause of death of end-stage renal disease. The disease has a prevalence of 1:400–1:1000 accounting for 10% of patients on dialysis. In most ADPKD patients, bilateral kidneys are similarly affected, with numerous fluid-filled cysts arising from different nephron segments.

Lung cancer is one of the dominant causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Ferroptosis, an irondependent form of programmed cell death, plays a key role in cancer immunotherapy. However, the role of immunity- and ferroptosis-related gene signatures in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unclear.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy in Europe and a leading cause of cancer-related death. Almost 50% of patients with CRC develop liver metastases, which heralds a poor prognosis unless metastases can be downsized to surgical resection or ablation.

Nivolumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor specific to the programmed death 1 (PD-1) receptor. Nivolumab has shown clinical responses in many malignancies. Although immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with nivolumab are largely tolerable, severe irAEs have occurred in some patients.

Over the past few decades, microwave (MW) radiation has been widely used, and its biological effects have been extensively investigated. However, the effect of MW radiation on human skin biology is not well understood. We study the effects of pulsed high-power microwaves (HPMs) on melanoma (G361 and SK-Mel-31) and normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells. A pulsed power generator (Chundoong) was used to generate pulsed HPMs (dominant frequency: 3.5 GHz). For treatment 1, 5, 15, and 45 shots are given to cells in which the electromagnetic energy of 0.

Although international forces and the Afghan National Army continue to score tactical victories over the Taliban, the security situation has deteriorated in some areas in the south, and Taliban forces have expanded their operations into previously peaceful areas of the west and around Kabul. The Taliban-dominated insurgency has expanded in scope despite operational disruption caused by International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Operation Enduring Freedom operations.

Fas-associated protein with death domain (FADD) is an essential adaptor protein in death receptor-mediated signal transduction. During apoptotic signaling, FADD functions in the cytoplasm, where it couples activated receptors with initiator caspase-8. However, in resting cells, FADD is pre-dominantly stored in the nucleus. In this study, we examined the modalities of FADD intracellular trafficking.

This is the "income effect". 13 In his well- known work Becker (1981) argued however that if the increase in household income were due to an increase in wage rates (i.e., an increase in labour productivity), the cost of children would increase, because time is involved in producing and rearing them. But other things being the same, this would lead to a decrease in the demand for children (this is the "substitution effect").

Breast cancer is the most common form of incident cancer and the dominant cause of cancer-related death among women aged 0-74 across the European Union. Female mortality due to lung cancer is significantly lower than that of breast cancer, and is also lower in women than men, but has been steadily rising (Bosetti et al 2008, Boyle Lewin 2008). Across the EU/EEA countries, men are more affected by HIV than women, with an infection ratio of 2:1. In women the predominant routes of transmission are heterosexual contact and injection drug use (ECDC 2008a).

Fear has dominated much of the experience of the human race from earliest times. Fear of death, fear of natural disaster, fear of human enemies and fear of deities: these were fused together beneath a dense shroud of the unseen and the unknown. The major impact of physics on civilisation has been to roll back this shroud. Physics explains. It enables us to see inside the Earth and inside our own bodies. It gives us ways to probe and to cure.

In the middle of the 20th century, we saw our planet from space for the first time. Historians may eventually find that this vision had a greater impact on thought than did the Copernican revolution of the 16th century, which upset the human self-image by revealing that the Earth is not the centre of the universe. From space, we see a small and fragile ball dominated not by human activity and edifice but by a pattern of clouds, oceans, greenery, and soils. Humanity's inability to fit its activities into that pattern is changing planetary systems, fundamentally.

General Classes of Cancer Genes There are two major classes of cancer genes. The first class comprises genes that directly affect cell growth either positively (oncogenes) or negatively (tumor-suppressor genes). These genes exert their effects on tumor growth through their ability to control cell division (cell birth) or cell death (apoptosis). Oncogenes are tightly regulated in normal cells. In cancer cells, oncogenes acquire mutations that relieve this control and lead to increased activity of the gene product.
