This research has raised the question of whether the vibration transmission at a wall junction depends on how the wall is excited (by either a sound wave or a mechanical shaker). The aim of this research is to investigate this question and hence contribute to the revision of the series of standards. Villot and Guigou-Carter (2000) have considered this problem but their equations (10) and (13) appear to be in error. This research will endeavour to derive the correct equations and r epeat Villot and Guigou Carter’s calculations.

This thesis documents a research program in which Australian grown Danshen extracts and related bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to be effective in scavenging free radicals, namely ROS generation, in a cell free system and NADPH oxidase derived superoxide (O2-) generation in vascular tissue (rat aorta). Danshen extracts, both aqueous and ethanol, and their active compounds (Tanshinone IIA, Salvianolic Acid B and Danshensu) demonstrated anti-oxidant activity however findings exhibited stronger activity in a cell free system than in the aortic vascular tissue.

This research is built upon the determination of the Eigenpairs of one and two dimensional positive differential operators with periodic boundary conditions. The Schrödinger equation was solved for positive operators in both one and two dimensions. Fourier series were used to express the derivatives as the summation of Fourier terms. This led to a novel approach for the calculation of the eigenmodels of a perturbed potential well. The perturbation can be done via an electric field applied to the potential well.

The research design adopted to address this problem utilised mixed data collection methodologies. In order to determine what was happening in the industry as a whole, a specially designed survey was conducted utilising both web-based and traditional paper-based instruments. This provided valuable quantitative data about the rate of uptake, types of companies and so on. This thesis derives closed form equations to describe electromagnetic device characteristics for a toroid, solenoid and a case study induction machine. By considering stored magnetic field energy, this approach allows the relationship between electrical, magnetic and kinetic energy to be quantified and analyzed in ways that allows improved accuracy compared with conventional magnetic circuit modeling methods. This thesis also provides insights into how geometric parameters impact energy transfer and operational characteristics of electromagnetic devices.
