  • Continued part 1, part 2 of ebook "Strength of materials II: Problems and solutions (Advanced topics)" includes the following main contents: Chapter 3 deals with the problem of dynamic loading; the method of problem-solving using dynamic factor is investigated for each of the three types of dynamic loading. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of limit state design of structural members; the most fundamental knowledge of limit state is provided together with its application on the design of axially-loaded members and flexural members.

  • The main purpose of the present work is to modify and enhance the existing fatigue rig which can be used to perform fatigue experiments on different sections including pipe sections. The structure of this paper is as follows. Section 2 describes the experimental setup used for the fatigue rig, describing the original design and current modifications which includes introducing two new load cells, plastic rollers and sliding flexible jaws to accommodate wide range of section sizes and shapes. Then we describe the instrumentation and data acquisition.

  • The results indicated the obtained ANN model can predict the condition rating of the bridge deck with an accuracy of 73.6%. If a margin error of ±1 was used, the accuracy of the proposed model reached a much higher value of 98.5%. Besides, a sensitivity analysis was conducted for individual input parameters revealed that Current Bridge Age was the most important predicting parameter of bridge deck rating. It was followed by the Design Load and Main Structure Design.

  • Cable-stayed bridges are structural systems effectively composing cables, main girders and towers. This bridge form has a beautiful appearance and easily fits in with the surrounding environment due to the fact that various structural systems can be created by changing the tower shapes and cable arrangements. Cable-stayed bridges are structures that require a high degree of technology for both design and construction, and hence demand sophisticated structural analysis and design techniques when compared with other types of conventional bridges.
