  • Flooding caused by historically high flows, especially in Tra Khuc-Ve River basin in the Mid-Central region in Vietnam in November 2013, which caused widespread damage. The purpose of this paper was to establish the inundation maps in the downstream part of Tra Khuc-Ve rivers by using the coupling of the hydrological and hydraulic models (MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 and MIKE 11 GIS). Calibration and validation of the hydrological model were in good agreement in terms of the vibration amplitude, absolute value, and phases.

  • . In the study, a model for estimating effective doses to the participants is proposed to evaluate the exercise system, using the effective dose rates at particular times and locations derived from a computer program. The effective dose received by a student when she/he follows a successful route is about a half of the dose received when she/he does not follow the exercise guide directions. In addition, elapsed time to finish an exercise when following a successful route is less than one-third of the time spent to finish an exercise when following the guide's directions.

  • One of the key characteristics of any summary is that it must be concise. To achieve this the content of the summary (1) must be focused on the key events, and (2) should leave out any information that she audience can infer on their own. We have recently begun a project on summarizing simple narrative stories. In our approach, we assume that the focus of the story has already been determined and is explicitly given in the story's lung-term representation; we concentrate instead on how one can plan what inferences an audience will be able to make when...

  • At higher temperatures, developed economies face a growing risk of large-scale shocks - for example, the rising costs of extreme weather events could affect global financial markets through higher and more volatile costs of insurance. Integrated assessment models provide a tool for estimating the total impact on the economy; our estimates suggest that this is likely to be higher than previously suggested.

  • In this paper we propose enhancing Web clients with new security mechanisms that can not only prevent ex- isting attacks, but are able to enforce all security policies based on monitoring client behavior. In particular, our new mechanisms support policies that range from disal- lowing use of certain Web client features (e.g., IFRAMEs or OBJECTs) to fine-grained, application-specific invari- ants such as taint-based policies that regulate the flow of credit-card information input by the user.

  • The promoter or sponsor must be involved in all of the planning phases to ensure a successful event. Often, the promoter is interested in monetary gain more than he or she is interested in public safety. If this appears to be his or her primary goal, local agency participation is essential. You may encourage the promoter to cooperate by linking attendance at planning meetings with the permit process and issuance. For example, the permit to host the event may require the promoter’s presence at the initial planning meeting. Teamwork promotes successful events. One way...

  • All involved agencies need to participate on this planning team from the outset to ensure a successful and safe event. At its initial meeting, the planning team should develop its mission and objectives, and determine the necessary components of the public safety plan. For example, what elements are within the realm of the promoter and what are within the realm of the public safety agencies? The planning team should also develop its structure using ICS as a model (that is, Sections, Branches, Divisions, and Groups, as needed). Chapter 3 will discuss ICS in greater detail....

  • Models are an initial useful starting point and can assist in a more structured and ordered approach to the planning of events. There is no one model which fits all. It is for the event organizer to perhaps select and engage with a model he / she finds useful, and one which they can understand, share with their colleagues / stakeholders and add to or detract from. These models are not set in stone, they need to be reviewed, but they may well assist as a reference point. As a visual representation of the key areas of the event planning...
