Bupivacaine, an amid-type local anesthetic, is widely used for clinical patients especially in pregnant women. In addition to neurotoxicity effect of bupivacaine, it can cross the placenta, accumulates in this tissue and retained in fetal tissues. Nevertheless, whether bupivacaine can cause neurotoxicity in fetus remains unclear.

Fetal mummification in canine is not so common. It happens when fetus died after one third of pregnancy and fetal fluid gets resorbed leading to shriveling placenta around the fetus. In canines papyreous type of mummification takes place. In papyreous mummification the fetal fluid gets resorbed and placenta becomes adhered to the fetus. Present case deals with the successful management of canine fetal mummification along with delivery of two live fetuses.

MRI has been increasingly used for detailed visualization of the fetus in utero as well as pregnancy structures. Yet, the familiarity of radiologists and clinicians with fetal MRI is still limited. This article provides a practical approach to fetal MR imaging. Fetal MRI is an interactive scanning of the moving fetus owed to the use of fast sequences. Single-shot fast spin-echo (SSFSE) T2-weighted imaging is a standard sequence. T1-weighted sequences are primarily used to demonstrate fat, calcification and hemorrhage.

The diagnosis of cancer during pregnancy at least in the Western world is a rare phenomenon, but this might be raised into the future due to late pregnancies in the modern societies. The coexistence of pregnancy and cancer implicates numerous medical, ethical, psychological and sometimes religious issues between the mother, the family and the treating physician. Breast, cervical cancer, melanoma and lymphoma are the most common malignancies diagnosed during pregnancy.

This book summarizes several aspects of GD, which is caused by not well-understood multifactorial mechanisms. Common strategies seem to be key in the understanding of the syndrome, i.e., endothelial dysfunction and the role of other placenta cells such as trophoblasts. It is a book that will definitively help to increase the knowledge-based management of GD for the well being of the mother and the fetus.

Recent expansion of biomedical knowledge on the interactions between the fetus, placenta, and the mother have transformed our view of pregnancy in general. Recent basic and clinical investigations have improved significantly our understanding on how hormones affect the pregnancy, and on how pregnancy affects the fetal and maternal hormones. Because pregnancy may be seen as the ultimate hormonally mediated event, the topic of endocrinology of pregnancy is particularly relevant.

Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is the termination of pregnancy before completion of the 20th gestational week. The term applies to both live and stillborn fetuses weighing 500 g. However, a fetus need not be identified if other products of conception are present (e.g., placenta or membranes). Familiarity with the local legal definition is mandatory because there is considerable state to state variation. Loss of pregnancy is very common. Recent estimates are that only 62.5% of pregnancies result in live births, 21.9% end in legal abortions, 13.8% have spontaneous abortions, 1.
