The generic structure potential

Genre analysis is one of the levels of discourse analysis in the light of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Martin (2007) proposed three strata in approaching discourse including the context of culture, situation, and discourse semantics (lexico-grammar). This paper examined the Generic Structure Potential (GSP) of Japanese precedents under the theory proposed by Hasan (1989) and then, provided some attention to characterizing other legal discourses.

The article contributed to the picture of genre analysis with a variety of legal discourses. The description of the macrostructure helps to characterize the cultural context of Vietnamese precedent discourses that is considered as a stratum of discourse analysis from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics.

This research seeks to unveil the GSP of course description and identify differences between formal course descriptions and online ones, analyzed based on a fourteen-element analytical framework. The findings revealed four more elements apart from those available in the original analytical framework. Most importantly, the course description was discovered to play the role of both informing and promotional, yet the former role is dominant.

This paper reports on a study of the generic structure potential (GSP) of the English introductory information pages of 10 university websites in Vietnam. The GSP analysis is based on Hasan’s (1985) framework. The aim of the analysis is to explore the obligatory, the optional, and the iterative elements, which together construct the GSP of these websites.
