The intestinal immune system
-
There is increasing evidence that the intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in the maturation of the immune system and the prevention of diseases during childhood. Early-life short-course antibiotic use may affect the progression of subsequent disease conditions by changing both host microbiota and immunologic development.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are monoclonal antibodies that block immune inhibitory pathways. Administration of ICIs augments T cell-mediated immune responses against tumor, resulting in improved overall survival in cancer patients. It has emerged that the intestinal microbiome can modulate responses to ICIs via the host immune system and that the use of antibiotics can lead to reduced efficacy of ICIs.

Ebook "Crossroads between Innate and Adaptive immunity II" is designed to serve as a forum to discuss the most recent progress in complement research as it pertains to human disease pathogenesis and therapeutics. The rapid pace of development in complement basic research and the advent and application of new experimental approaches in this field have now allowed us to take an integrated view of the in vivo biology of the complement system.

Necrotic enteritis is a significant problem to the poultry industry globally and, in Norway up to 30% of Norwegian turkey grow-outs can be affected. However, despite an awareness that differences exist between necrotic enteritis in chickens and turkeys, little information exists concerning the pathogenesis, immunity, microbiota or experimental reproduction of necrotic enteritis in turkeys.

Chickens are major sources of human nutrition worldwide, but the chicken intestinal microbiota can be a source of bacterial infection. The microbiota has potential to regulate the colonization of pathogens by competitive exclusion, production of antimicrobial compounds, and stimulation of the mucosal immune system.

Several studies indicated that dietary organic selenium (Se) usually absorbed better than an inorganic source, with high retention and bioavailability. Dietary Se as an antioxidant element affects the immune system and hematological status in animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of bacterial selenium as an organic source on hematology, immunity response, selenium retention, and gut morphology in broiler chickens.

P21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) stimulates growth and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC) through activation of multiple signalling pathways. Up-regulation of CRC stem cell markers by PAK1 also contributes to the resistance of CRC to 5-fluorouracil.

Very early onset of inflammatory bowel disease in a patient with long-segment hirschsprung’s disease
Hirschsprung’s disease (HSCR) is a congenital defect caused by impaired development of the enteric nervous system. Inflammatory bowel disease has an increased prevalence in patients with HSCR. We describe the clinical course of a patient with long-segment HSCR who, at the age of 12 months, developed diffuse intestinal inflammation most clinically consistent with very early onset inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are intestinal disorders characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Interleukin-10 is one of the most important anti-inflammatory cytokines involved in the intestinal immune system and because of its role in downregulating inflammatory cascades, its potential for IBD therapy is under study.

Opportunistic infections (OIs) are infections that occur due to an immune system that does not involve invasive, but can affect conditions that occur in people with a low immune system in people with HIV / AIDS. Giardia lamblia is one of the intestinal protozoa that exist in humans and animals, whereas in individuals with immunodeficiency, it can be chronic diarrhea, thus becoming dehydrated and malnourished which can increase mortality and morbidity in HIV patients.

By WHO forecasts, a further increase in the prevalence and mortality of COPD among people of working age is predicted, due to uncontrolled environmental pollution, a tobacco pandemic, an increase in the level of allergens and a genetic predisposition. In chronization and progression of COPD, there is a violation of cellular and humoral immunity, production of pro-inflammatory cytokines of phagocytic cell activity that contribute to the persistence of the inflammatory process in the lungs.

Opportunistic infections are infections that occur due to a decrease in the immune system and can cause serious conditions in people with weak immune systems such as in people with HIV / AIDS. Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia lamblia are examples of the opportunistic intestinal protozoa that can cause chronic diarrhea so that it becomes dehydrated and malnutrition which can increase mortality and morbidity in HIV sufferers. Observational study with cross-sectional design on 50 fecal samples of HIV / AIDS patients. Cryptosporidium sp.

Melatonin acts classically through the widely expressed G protein-coupled membrane receptors MT1 and MT2, respectively. The functional role of the MT receptors is not fully clear with multiple effects, such as effects on the circadian, reproductive, immune, cardiovascular, and intestinal systems, being suggested.

A variety of microbes manipulate the cytoskeleton of mammalian cells to promote their internalization, motility and⁄or spread. Among such bacte-ria, enteropathogenic Escherichia coliand enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coliare closely related pathogens that adhere to human intestinal cells and reorganize the underlying actin cytoskeleton into ‘pedestals’.
