The leaves of Cassia alata l.
-
Six compounds were isolated from the leaves of Cassia alata L. (Caesalpiniaceae), including: aloe emodin (1), aloe emodin-8-Oβ-glucoside (2), rhein methyl ester (3), kaempferol (4), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (5) and phytol (6). Rhein methyl ester (3) was first isolated from the Cassia genus. Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis

In our study, the methanol leaf extract of C. alata showed a significant antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria strains Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. The organic layers such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous layers, were prepared by partitioning the methanol extract with n-hexane and ethyl acetate successively. We successfully isolated and identified the structures of five compounds from C. alata leaves.

We reported the isolation and identification of the antraquinones, aloe-emodin and rhein from the leaves of Cassia alata L., Caesalpiniaceae growing in Daoai, Lamdong. In the previous work, we reported that flavonoid kaempferol had been isolated from the leaves of this tree. Now, we continue to reporte two antraquinones: aloe-emodin and rhein which were separated by two methods: classical column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography. Their structures were identifed by spectra such as: IR, UV, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, MS and mp.
