Ebook "Bleach plant effluents from the pulp and paper industry" covers bleach plant effluents, that most polluting effluent from the pulp and paper industry. Disappearance of benthic invertebrates, a high incidence of fish diseases, and mutagenic effects on the aquatic fauna are some of the consequences of the disposal of bleach effluents into surface waters.

In addition to its effects on air quality, stubble burning also affects soil fertility (through the destruction of its nutrients), economic development and climate. The crop stubbles (if managed properly) could provide immense economic benefits to the farmers and protect the environment from the severe pollution. Some of the alternative management practices include the incorporation of the stubble into the soil, use of stubble as fuel in power plants, use as raw material for pulp and paper industries, or as biomass for biofuel production.

Pectinases find wide application in different industrial applications, e.g., textile, food, tea, paper and pulp, vegetable oil extractions, saccharification of agricultural remains, and in fermented drinks. Three fungal strains were screened for pectinase production. Results indicated that all strains are capable of producing a pectinase enzyme.

The conversion of waste lignin from the paper and pulp industry is a potential process to produce chemicals and materials in the industry. With the development and the demand for the pulp and paper industry, the amount of waste lignin will increase remarkably. In Vietnam, the forest tree for the pulp industry is abundant, and the pulp industry has increased in recent years. In parallel, the government planned to develop the material resource and high-tech factories for this industry.

Gum is natural biopolymers and formed via process of gummosis due to biotic and abiotic stresses i.e. injury, infection, drought, heat, high temperature, asby product of metabolic pathway and cannot re-enter in the system. Gum karaya (Sterculia urens Roxb.) is a dry deciduous tree belonging to the family Sterculiaceae distributed throughout India and Chhattisgarh. Karaya gum is the dried exudate obtained from trees of Sterculia species. Karaya gum is predominately used for many industries such as petroleum and gas, textiles, paper and pulp, pharmaceuticals, medicine and several other products.

Alkaline pulping liquors are the problematic for environment due to their toxicity and poor biodegradability. During last decade, anaerobic treatment technology has been successfully applied to various types of pulp and paper industry effluents. In the present study, the treatment of highly toxic pulping liquors in lab-scale has been done using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from sediment samples of pulp and paper mills in Vietnam. This treatment could reduce 70 - 75% of COD after three weeks. The COD removal could achieve 82 - 88% by subsequent aerobic treatment in 48 hours.

Bacillomycins are the cyclic lipopeptides belonging to the iturin family produced by Bacillus spp. mostly Bacillus subtilis, which are biosynthesized by multimodular proteins termed as NRPSs (non-ribosomal peptide synthetases) genes. There is tremendous research on Bacillus spp. lipopeptides or antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) showing great antagonistic potentiality of these strains, especially with bacillomycins producing genes.

In the study of hydrobiology of water basins, a separate study of higher plants is required. Higher plants growing in water for aquatic organisms remain not only a habitat, a nutrient, a source of oxygen, but they are also important in the course of many biological processes in this environment. The vegetation of aquatic and coastal aquatic plants weakens the rate of flow of water, impedes the movement of silt and mineral particles, has antierosion significance and is used to strengthen the banks of water bodies.

Pulp and paper industries are considered as one of the major polluters of the environment all over the world. These industries are the fifth largest contributor to water pollution. Pulping process, used for paper manufacturing leads to release of toxic chemicals or effluents into the environment and pollute water, air and soil therefore it is a major threat to ecosystem. A number of microbes have been found in the nearby soil of paper mill that are useful in the breakdown of environmental pollutants.

The utilization of black liquor, produced by the pulp and paper industry in Egypt, as a workability aid and set retarder admixture has been investigated. This approach may help eliminate the environmentally polluting black liquor waste. It also provides a low cost by-product, which can be widely used in the construction industry. The properties of black liquor and its performance on concrete at two different ratios of water to cement have been studied. The results revealed that black liquor from rice straw pulp increases concrete workability, improves compaction, and reduces honeycombing.

In spite of all the advances in control over the past 50 years the PID controller is still the most common controller, see [1]. Even if more sophisticated control laws are used it is common practice to have an hierarchical structure with PID control at the lowest level, see [2–5]. A survey of more than 11,000 controllers in the refining, chemicals, and pulp and paper industries showed that 97% of regulatory controllers had the PID structure, see [5]. Embedded systems are also a growing area of PID control, see [6].

Agriculture and forestry are poised on the brink of a quantum leap forward through the further application of exciting new tools such as genomics and transgenic plants. In the near future, it will be possible to produce a higher quantity of improved quality crops than even imagined just a few years ago. In addition to feed and food, it will be possible to provide raw materials for industrial uses. For example, cotton fibers, wood ligno-celluloses, corn carbohydrates, soybean oils, and other plant constituents will be altered via designed changes in metabolic pathways.

Eleven million tonnes of waste are produced yearly by the European pulp and paper industry, of which 70% originates from the production of deinked recycled paper. Wastes are very diverse in composition and consist of rejects, different types of sludges and ashes in mills having on-site incineration treatment. The production of pulp and paper from virgin pulp generates less waste but the waste has similar properties to waste from the production of deinked pulp, although with less inorganics [...].

This paper describes basic characteristics of major production units from a pulp and paper manufacturing plant, focusing on major aspects of risk exposure experienced during construction and operation. Different types of pulp and paper manufacturing processes are presented with particular consideration of risks pertaining to the production stage and pertaining to new technology. Turbines and gas turbines are not handled in this paper due to the fact that these have been presented in earlier IMIA papers. The last chapter is dedicated to some interesting cases of loss.
