The research covered quite a bit of territory with the simple objective - to 'break free' of the 'risk' of continuing architectural patterns in practice through and beyond mid career. On reflection I identified four stages within the history of my practice covering three disciplines; art, architecture and the political economies relation with urban geography. I was hoping to tie these together in a more coherent way and write reflectively to deepen those relations.

This thesis documents a research program in which Australian grown Danshen extracts and related bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to be effective in scavenging free radicals, namely ROS generation, in a cell free system and NADPH oxidase derived superoxide (O2-) generation in vascular tissue (rat aorta). Danshen extracts, both aqueous and ethanol, and their active compounds (Tanshinone IIA, Salvianolic Acid B and Danshensu) demonstrated anti-oxidant activity however findings exhibited stronger activity in a cell free system than in the aortic vascular tissue.

This research project investigates the influence of decoration and decorating on a fashion design practice, exploring the transformative effects of both in relation to surface and structure. Decoration is considered an after-effect, an element that can be differentiated from the object it adheres to, sometimes making it superfluous to the object’s function. In this project I consider decoration as having its own function – the ability, through its link to the ‘exterior’ world, to transform the shape, appearance and materials of forms by modifying their facade.

The aim of this research is to produce information on decision making in relation to fertiliser use. This information can be used in the Game Theory model to calculate optimal strategies on phosphorus fertiliser application amounts for the individuals within the group. If the results indicate a benefit to the individual and the community as a whole, and are seen as practical, then on a catchment wide basis this should lead to changes in management practices that will minimise phosphorus pollution of the Hopkins River catchment’s waterways.

This is a qualitative collective case study that seeks to understand the phenomena of graffiti and its related subcultures. By employing Interpretivist techniques, the research attempts to raise questions about harm minimisation, zero tolerance and graffiti, as well as broaden the debate about these distinct policy approaches for local communities. This research project investigates the relationship between music composition, particularly electronic pop, and sound design (the editing/mixing of sound for cinema), with its main focus on Multi-channel (Surround Sound) techniques. It proposes new practices that extend music compositional tools into embracing spatial techniques employed by sound design. My research encompasses both the conceptual development (ie spatial techniques in creating narratives) and the practical issues relating to the production and technology needed for such works.
