Ebook "Independent accounts: The possibilities for auditor independence in the age of financial scandal (Advances in public interest accounting, Volume 12)" use of independence as a protective shield in obscuring winners and losers regarding financial activity, the papers illustrate accounting contribution to the failures of free markets worldwide: systemic global poverty, questionable privatization of public enterprises and public goods, and greater divides between so-called first and third world nations.

Very far back in time, more than twenty-six hundred years ago, on the banks of a small Italian river, known as the Tiber, were laid the foundations of a city which was in time to become the conqueror of the civilized world. Of the early days of this renowned city of Rome we know very little. What is called its history is really only legend,--stories invented by poets, or ancient facts which became gradually changed into romances. The Romans believed them, but that is no reason why we should. They believed many things which we doubt. And yet these romantic stories are the only existing...

We present a web tool that allows users to explore news stories concerning the 2012 US Presidential Elections via an interactive interface. The tool is based on concepts of “narrative analysis”, where the key actors of a narration are identified, along with their relations, in what are sometimes called “semantic triplets” (one example of a triplet of this kind is “Romney Criticised Obama”).

News stories are typically rich in NEs and therefore, comparable news corpora can be expected to contain NETEs (Klementiev and Roth, 2006; Tao et al., 2006). The large quantity and the perpetual availability of news corpora in many of the world’s languages, make mining of NETEs a viable alternative to traditional approaches. It is this opportunity that we address in our work. In this paper, we detail an effective and scalable mining method, called MINT (MIning Named-entity Transliteration equivalents), for mining of NETEs from large comparable corpora. ...

‘Halloa! Below there!’ When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his hand, furled round its short pole. One would have thought, considering the nature of the ground, that he could not have doubted from what quarter the voice came; but instead of looking up to where I stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his head, he turned himself about, and looked down the Line. There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so, though I could not have said...

The abuse of technology is evident in some of the examples cited above. Fingers-on-the-buttons has now replaced engagement-of-the-brain with in- creasing frequency. I should also call attention to the insistence in educa- tional documents that students in K-4 be allowed to have access at all times to the calculator ([MAF], pp.57-59; [N1], p.19; [N5], p.vi; [UN]).

On the brink of the twentieth century, baseball was still quite young. Legend has it that the game was invented by a man called Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York. Doubleday was credited with naming baseball and creating its rules, although no proof has ever existed to back the story. In reality, the game that would become America’s pastime evolved over time from similar games like cricket and rounders, which had their origins in the United Kingdom.

T his book of baseball history is unique. It is the first one devoted entirely to those players and teams who played baseball outside so-called Organized Baseball—that is, the professional major and minor leagues—up to World War II. For baseball may be likened to a large house containing many rooms occupied by a wide variety of baseball tenants—college players, members of the armed forces, industrial players, semipros, blacks, women, Indians, town team players, and softballers. Five chapters are devoted to blacks before segregation compelled them to form their own professional leagues.

Chapter Author's Note To an extent, this novel deals with the legal aspects of child custody in the State of Maine. I asked for help in understanding this subject from my friend Warren Silver, who is a fine attorney. Warren guided me carefully, and along the way he also told me about a quaint old device called the Stenomask, which I immediately appropriated for my own fell purposes. If I've made procedural mistakes in the story which follows, blame me, not my legal resource. Warren also asked me--rather plaintively ¡ª if I could maybe put a 'good' lawyer in my book....

Contemporary perspectives in psychology and education characterize ideal students as rational and in control of their thinking and actions. The good student is often described as intentional, cognitive, metacognitive, critical, and reflective. I begin with a brief history of control and ratio- nality to establish how “The Tradition” is deeply rooted in philosophy, religion, and, in gen- eral, the story of Western civilization.

While – as Hake (2004: 193) has stated – there is still a tendency to estab- lish a discursive dichotomy between consumer culture and the elitist thoughts of avant-garde movements, it should be stressed that both share a common rhetoric of innovation and progress. Furthermore, it was precisely this intel- lectual reflection about the status of art vis-à-vis everyday life that called for a tight bond between the two and led to the goal of an Aesthetisierung des Alltags (aestheticisation of everyday life) in the context of the Weimar Republic....

Basquiat allows him to retell some of the C.V.J story in colour, with movement, and in pictorial terms impossible to achieve in print. The book provides a structural plan for the film which is then fleshed out with the detail which we see on the screen. We perceive an accumulation of vignettes which explain why the film has a formal physicality, the presence of an object which a simple narrative would not have. The film, like Schnabel called painting, is a bouquet of mistakes.

Another case in example is Ferrari, which has a programme called ‘One–to–One’, where with the help of a Ferrari advisor, a customer can modify virtually every part of the car, which does no affect reliability. To bring the story a little closer to home, Viren Bhagat, a jeweller from Mumbai, who specializes in bespoke pieces, believes in the take–it–or–leave–it attitude. He believes that allowing a customer to make changes to the design destroys the uniqueness of the price. He also insists that a customer visit his office to buy the price. ...
