Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5) is the highest conserved member of IGFBP family, and has the broad range of biological activities effecting on the cell growth. This study aims to investigate the association between genetic variation in IGFBP5 gene and the growth of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus).

Bacteria Edwardsiella ictaluri is a major pathogenic bacterium threatening aquatic species and seriously affecting the aquaculture industry globally. Previous studies have focused on analyzing bacteria's pathological signs and virulence on pangasius fingerlings. However, research on the virulence and pathogenicity of Edwardsiella ictaluri in the striped catfish at the fry stage is still limited.

Our previous study demonstrated that plant extract-based diets of E. hirta and P. guajava were effective to stimulate immune responses in striped catfish (P. hypophthalmus). Therefore, in this study, we investigated the chemical investigation as well as the immunomodulatory potential of some isolated compounds from E. hirta and P. guajava.

Striped catfish or Vietnamese catfish mainly contributes to national aquaculture exports. However, bacterial diseases result in the decrease of striped catfish production efficiency and the most popular disease is hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Aeromonas hydrophila. Bacteriophages or bacterial viruses have been investigated as alternative biological agents to control pathogenic bacterial infections in aquaculture for many decades.

The results showed that fabp10a gene was not strongly expressed in all 3 types of tissues; fabp3 gene was most strongly expressed in liver tissue and fabp7 was highly up-regulated in brain tissue. The results of this study provide a resource for further research on the function of fabp genes and their genetic diversity in striped catfish.

Striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypohthalmus) is a native freshwater fish species in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, and significantly contributes to national aqua exports. Currently, however, the sustainable development of striped catfish farming is being affected by bacterial pathogen infections, of which hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria is one of the most common diseases.

The 1998 Census of Aquaculture reports that the northeast region has 2,698 acres of freshwater devoted to aquaculture production. A wide variety of fingerling and food fish are grown. Various sport and game fish were grown on 37 farms including fingerling largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and sunfish. About 107 acres of channel catfish were in production. Records do not show the quantity or value of pond-raised fish sold into northeastern recreational markets.

The culture of striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Sauvage), or “ca tra” in Vietnamese in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, can be considered as a unique aquatic farming system in many ways. Production is the fastest growth recorded in any aquaculture sector, ever, based on a single species, superseding the production per unit for any form of primary production. Stripped catfish aquaculture now need to be improved in many aspects and environmental issues need to be paid more attention to ensure the sustainable development.
